Bluetooth Range on Samsung Note 5 (Coming From Samsung Galaxy 5)

thank you for your great and wonderful post , my experience with my note 5 is the same like you , but i faced the problem after updating the software , and tried to factory reset but the problem is still the same , so your post suggests it can be the fault of the Bluetooth antenna or hardware problem , my problem is that i bought the phone from another country and before sending the mobile back i need to be sure if it is a hardware and not a software problem , any advice will be great , thank you

I believe I experienced a similar problem to what others report here. I bought my Note5 from T-Mobile back in October. Never really used Bluetooth much, and when I did I had no problems. A few weeks ago I got a Gear S2, and for a few days the range seemed fine. Then after about a week (and possibly right after a software update), the range went to hell. I could not get even a few feet out of Bluetooth. Strangely, human bodies proved to be the Bluetooth antenna's kryptonite. I tried many experiments: for example putting my watch on my left hand and my phone in my right back pocket caused Bluetooth to disconnect from my watch within seconds. If I held my phone in one hand and my watch in another, and separated them by 3/4 the length of my outstretched arms, I could establish a Bluetooth connection. But if I moved them down to my waist (same separation length) so as to block the signal with my body, I lost the connection. Of course I also tried connecting my phone to other devices and got similar results. Finally I tried putting an iPhone equidistant from my Note5 and a Note4, and used the 'Bluetooth Finder' app to measure the signal strength. At 3 feet I could get -60 dB with the Note4, but -90 dB with the Note5 (so 1000 times less signal strength). I say all this to demonstrate that the problem seems to be weak reception in the Note5.

I called T-Mobile and they handled a warranty replacement from Samsung. My new Note5 works great. Right now I've got my phone with me, and my watch in another room, yet they are connected via Bluetooth! I'm not sure if this is just a case of a bad device whose antenna wore out after significant usage, or if the software update had anything to do with it. For what it's worth, I updated everything on my Note5 right away, and still have no problems. Perhaps the order in which the Android and Gear app updates are performed matters? I know that's mostly baseless speculation, but other than simple malfunctioning hardware I can't really come up with another explanation.

How long it takes to repair ur note 5 ? Its that so long ?

so did you solve it or just replaced the phone ?

Very frustrating. I live on bluetooth every day. Mass user business and personal. I have the new Tone Platinum headset and the lg urbane watch connected to my note 5. Everything worked great until about two weeks ago. The issue was just as described suddenly out of now where I had massive range issues making my phone obsolete. After factory reset and everything else I could think of, I finally sent it in for a warranty replacement via ATT. This solved my problem! I was relieved. However it only lasted 6 days before the problem came back. Now I am right back to square one! Not sure what to do now. I can not live without bluetooth. Calling ATT yet again!

Okay, it's happened for a third time, nearly 30 days apart February March and April. Samsung said they could only offer expedited shipping on the third repair. They said it would take 3 repairs before they would offer a different solution than warranty service. I decided to call AT&T, and I'm glad I did. There's a phone repair center about 15 minutes from my house, and they 3 Flash the phone, and saw that it did not fix the Bluetooth issues. After telling them about my two warranty repairs, they ordered a refurbished phone for me free of charge. It's working so far 😕

From the Bluetooth SIG:

Device ClassTransmit PowerIntended Range
Class 31 mWless than 10 meters
Class 22.5 mW10 meters, 33 feet
Class 1100 mW100 meters, 328 feet

Phones and headsets are class 3 devices. The "less than 10 meters" range is with nothing (like a human body) in the path. Put the phone on your right hip, or in your right pocket, and the earphone in your left ear and, if the earphone breaks up, that's within range. (The human body absorbs a LOT of 2.4 GHz radiation when you're starting with 1mW.)

Yes. I understand Bluetooth frequency strength and distance.
But my phone has been defective three times.
Thanks for the info though.

Apologies for the long time to reply. I was unable to solve the problem, and the only "fix" was a warranty replacement. After mulling the issue over for awhile and doing some more research online, I think the issue is hardware. This is Samsung's fault and if your phone is less than a year old they should be able to replace it. If you're in the US now, there are solution centers here that can take care of it via US mail.
