Bonsai v4.1.1 General Release now available

Once in a great while a get an occasional lockup but not enough to even mention.

Im sure this information is lurking somewhere in these massive forums, but search as I might I cannot find it.

Im a nerd and want my sprint boot screen back :-[

Is there any way to easily flash over the original with CWM?

I'm not completely sure if CWM has anything to do with it. I think its actually part of the kernel that Bonsai changed to swap out the Sammy boot screen.

Is anyone else having their Epics with Bonsai Rom freeze?

There is a known problem with lockups happening on the v4.1.1 release usually during some virtual keyboard input. We've been testing a number of beta kernels that seem to improve the situation, but don't completely resolve it. Some users have reported that if they install the Beta Swype that the problems go away. That would explain why we have had a hard time isolating it but I cannot confirm that it is a complete fix.

Meanwhile, the Gingerbread release testing is going very well...

Hi Paul

Long time ago you made me a package to remove the blinking android showing that the boot screen was customizable :)

I found the original boot here: [Stock Boot Animation] Restores the stock boot animation - xda-developers

Im glad to have the sprint splash back after months of looking at a spinning android. I still get the Bonzai on start....I think you are right its part of the kernel, and I don't mind it. I love the logo but the yellow url text plopped on the top irks me every time I see it...I'll live with it, with a tiny plea to make it more easy on the eyes to devs if they happen to see this...Id rather the logo package be bigger with the URL in the same orientation under the logo text...and in a conforming color.

seems nit picky when I reread it, but there you go! ha! O:-)

Unrelated but wondering if IQ is disabled in Bonzai?

There are actually 3 different "boot screens" that are played during boot process.

#1 is the Samsung.com logo (White on Black) that is part of the param.lfs filesystem. We don't change that in the Bonsai release but we do offer some instructions on how to change that to a Bonsai logo on the Bonsai website.

#2 is the Logo imbedded in the Bonsai kernel that we display during boot. It is a landscape oriented Bonsai.

#3 is the animated boot logo which we have replaced on the ROM itself. I know there are a number of custom ones lurking on the web, but not sure I have seen the stock Sprint logos to restore. A google search shows a bit more info. samsung epic animated boot logo - Google Search

Hope that helps.

Nevermind, I've got it too work. I read a post above showing that you can use any modem you'd like, but according to bonsaigeek, you have to be on EC05 or EB13.

BTW the Rom works great. Best ROM I've got my hands on so far!

Just fyi, the install package for v4.1.1 does require that you are on an EB13 or EC05 ROM. Reason for this is that we will update your EB13 modem to EC05 during the install process. Problem is, we cannot detect if you have an EE03 or later modem installed and attempting to install the EB13->EC05 modem patch causes the error code 7.

Once you have completed the install, you can use ODIN or Heimdall to flash the modem version of your choice, but just know that if it is not an official Samsung/Sprint released modem, we will require you to be on an official modem in order to run the upgrade.

BTW, this issue and requirement are documented in the install docs.

I've read over the entire Bonsai website and I can't find a mention anywhere of what Android version their ROMs are based on. Shouldn't that be one of the first things you tell people? :D

I guess part of the reason for that is that we are not shipping a modded stock release in most cases. For example, the kernel is custom and pulls in many of the features that have been commited to Gingerbread and later kernels. The Android API that we support is important though and you are correct that we probably should make that more prominent. Many of the system binaries are from EC05 in v4.1.1, but in some cases, we are installing system that is compiled from AOSP sources. Really a mix as we try to migrate further away from Sprint and Samsung.

Hi folks - I am having 2 issues with Bonsai 4.1.1:

1 - I can't connect to 4g. It looks and looks and I live in LA where it has rolled out and I was able to connect prior to rooting and putting in Bonsai. I even upgraded to EE03 to no avail.

2 - My battery life is really bad. I did clear batt stats before, but this hasn't resolved the issue. I am trying JuiceDefender now but it hasn't made much of a dent yet.

Any help on either would be great!

Juice defender is not going to help you as there are a number of reports that letting the phone do what it thinks is best on power is the best approach.

You must have a runaway app or something that is spinning because of attempts to connect on 4G. I do know that 4G will work with v4.1.1.

You might try reflashing. If that does not help, make sure you have a backup and wipe data to factory reset and try again.

Just FYI, we've been learning quite a bit about some problems with install process due to bugs in the edify scripting engine for installs. Because of that, we have rewritten the install process to get away from these issues and are currently testing that with our v5 releases as well as our new Galaxy Tab ROM. The result is much better control and better results in the install.

We are still in Beta with the v5 ROM and probably won't release it outside of our Early Access area until we have an official Samsung Gingerbread release, but I am planning to port this new install back to a v4.1.3 release that will be made public. Look for that later next week.

Seems like after a few weeks of using this ROM my phone is beginning to slow down at times. I don't know how this ROM works but can you use another kernel with this ROM like genocide?

You sure can. Naturally Randy and the Bonsai dev team have developed what they feel is a good kernel & ROM package but that doesn't mean you can't flash a different kernel and experiment. I personally have had zero problems and great battery life and speed from their package. I don't even use SetCPU half the time, I forget to reinstall it and things work great.

Paul, do you know if root is in the Bonsai Kernal or ROM? I believe root is held in the genocide kernel.

FYI, seems better after reboot and shutting down juice defender. I also flashed the stock browser that I still had on my midNIGHT extras and that seemed to help too.

In Bonsai they have it in the ROM last I checked in earlier versions. I don't see why they would of changed since then.

Genocide, Twilight and a few others have root in the kernel itself.

I just reflashed Bonsai 4.1.1 after my phone wouldn't reboot anymore (looped). I also loaded a theme, first "simply blue" then "matted blue." In either case, my market FC's all the time.

Can someone help me? What needs to be done to fix this?

If its just the Market causing this then goto Settings>Apps>Manage Apps>Market (clear data/cache)

See if that does it.. Otherwise you may have to boot into CWM and clear cache/dalvik cache and reboot.

If that still doesn't do it then you may need to reflash the ROM again. Regardless it sounds like this happened once you flashed your first theme so it has to be something related to those themes because the Bonsai ROM hasn't changed or modified anything with the Market (Vending.apk) to cause conflicts.

Argh, yeah I've been doing the market app clear cache/data already. it tried to load, walked me through terms of market, and then FC's again and again.

I'll reflash ROM and matte blue theme (I wouldn't recommend flashing simply blue w/Bonsai)

**update: Thanks Paul627g - all is reflashed and it runs smoothly!
