I could not find anywhere else to post on this topic. I just returned my 3rd evo within my 30 day guarentee. I really was excited about this phone and ordered one on opening day. Nevertheless, I had issues , then I had an issue with the second. The third one seemed to have better build (I received it the 28th) and I was satisifed. Something was different though and I could not figure out what it was. Then it came to me -- the screen was darker, and less clear, colors not as sharp. I read and read and see that they 002 models are made by novitell and for whatever reason they changed the "2nd" gen models to epson screens. The epson screen as I've read it has worse color contrast and less vivid color although being "brighter." The new screens are cheaper and not as nice. I just felt that downgrading the product right after making it was wrong-- and so I canceled the contract and Think I may wait for something down the line; maybe the samsung but there are some disadvantages there as well. Does anyone have any input or noticed any of the same issues ?

I've read a few articles on the change.

I'd like to read those articles. Could you provide the links? Thanks.

Here is one article that includes a video showing the difference:

HTC EVO 4G: New Epson Screens ? Inferior Contrast Ratio (Video) : Product Reviews Net

Wow that video was a waste of 2 minutes of my life.....good thing I did no watch the whole 7 minutes of that useless video.

It is sad when people have nothing to cry about on a smartphone other than hardly noticeable differences in screens or how they can't record a big time motion picture movie with their phone.

Are you kidding me? are you that picky that you are on your 3rd device which you are now going to get rid of because it does not have the exact same screen as the early models that were released (only a very very similar one)

Please give your phone back and move on people like you are the ones who waste a company like HTCs time and resources inspecting and replacing your phone every week when they could be focusing on improving software on the device.

Sorry for being harsh but this is the flat out truth you are nitpicking like a 4 year old girl.

tom your being a retard. Its not a small issue -- its a rather large one. The colors are off on the video which lessens the quality of everything your viewing. Stop participating in this conversation-- thanks.

Well I received an 002 which is why I noticed-- then received the 003 on the third one. There are apparently a lower row of dead pixel on the phone -- just search around. That's fine if it does not bothther you but 'the original screen was far better imo. I think I'll just wait out till it either resolves itself or drops in price. I was just sharing some information with everyone.

If there are dead pixels in that quantity, replace it. In all honesty, you paid for this phone and you want it to please you. I get that and you have every right to do so. With screens, there is always going to be a difference between them. It shouldn't be that bad.

I've had a 002 and currently have the Epson 003. I can tell you personally, that yeah, there is a difference in brightness. But you know what? I never have the brightness turned all the way up. So what difference would it make it me that the Epson may be a few shades darker at its brightest compared to the Novatec display. I generally keep my brightness set around 30% all day, every day. There's absolutely no need for any brighter unless I'm in extreme sunlight.

As a plus for the Epson screen, it has a TRUE black. on the Novatec screen it is extremely hard to get that display to render a true black; without the purplish/blue hue. I appreciate that the Epson displays colors more accurately, and to me that makes more difference than the brightness issue. True, some may not be as 'vivid', but they're more accurately displayed on the Epson.

IMO he is one of those guys that will find something wrong with EVERY phone out there...

I do understand where you're coming from on just wanting to 'share your information' with everyone in this forum. But come on, you're not just 'sharing your information', you're shouting out to everyone about how you got jipped by HTC. If I read this article correctly, they weren't swapping the screens out because it was cost effective, they were doing it because the Novatec are prone to shorting out..Funny thing is, that's EXACTLY what happened to my phone that I had picked up on the 4th. I was talking on it, and I noticed the screen was flickering. Looked at it for a few seconds, and it just went out, completely. Never came back on.

Both screens have their ups and downs, you are going to get that with everything you buy, and replace. It's the nature of electronics and the industry. Stop trying to get everyone riled up over something you cannot control the flow of. If you don't like it, return the Evo and wait for the next best thing, and hope that it isn't at one time or another produced with two different types of display(which I can almost guarantee will happen).

This isn't anything new. Even the original HTC Touch had different LCD screens in the same model. One produced true white colors, the other produced a yellowish tint, but the colors looked more vibrant. Take your pick. Point is, it's a natural process and shouldn't be compared to each other. Are you going to carry around two devices or go anal when someone next to you has a different screen in public?

I would say stop right there.

No one has had 3 EVO returns. And you are already wanting a 4th. Get different phone. Do it today. I absolutely guarantee that you will be miserable with the 4th and 5th and 100th.

You two were simply not meant to be together.

Completely agree, some people just like to complain and find something "wrong" with devices. My advice to you is stop reading forums and you will be content. Some people take things they read way overboard! 3 replacement phones in the first month?!?!? Are you serious? that is beyond perfectionist.

hahah im glad we think alike!

I agree with you. The difference is very noticeable, especially when you see them both in person side by side. I have an 0002 with the slightest amount of leakage, and had thought about exchanging it until I heard about the change in screens. I took my phone into the Sprint store and did my own comparison, and guess what??? I'm sticking with my 0002.

Thanks Evo-- I don't think the majority of people understand my issues. My first phone had screen seperation and the second one I received the vibration sensors stop responding-- there was not vibration. I am not nit picking issues but I thought the other screen was far nicer than this one. There is no need for trolling or harping just sharing some concern; concern from a lot of bloggers on many differnt sites.
