I'm seeing some pretty good prices on Nexus 5's on Craigslist, like $50 over Google Play prices. I'll pay $50 to not have to wait. But if I'm not the original buyer will I have the warranty? The seller is willing to give me his receipt.

I could very well be mistaken, but I believe the warranty is tied to the the phone, not the owner. The question is whether or not the phone has been "registered" which might be what kicks the warranty clock off. I could be wrong about that too, but that would be the question I'd have.

Yeah, I've done a lot of googling around trying to find an answer to what you would think would be a common question but nothing so far.

I read somewhere that the warranty is for the original purchaser only.

EDIT: It is in the Nexus 5 warranty booklet that comes with the phone. It says for the original purchaser and not transferable.

Thanks. I see a lot of overpriced Nexus 5's on eBay and Craigslist, I hope prospective buyers think to ask if there is a warranty.

If not purchased from authorized reseller, no warranty. It has always been this way. Not to say that companies haven't made exceptions, but you can not compel them to do so if they choose not to.

I'd say buy from play store I believe most of the nexus 5 models have been restocked.

Yes. And if not, it's best to wait the extra few weeks to have a warranty.

Google is silly to only have the warranty for the original purchaser and not tied to the device like every other company. Just ridiculous given all the resells that eventually take place when new devices come out. Another way to provide a disservice to customers.

So then what do you do when Google says we only provide warranty service to the original buyer.

They have not been restocked.

Did someone say they should be compelled? No.
An individual can easily transfer the warranty of an iPhone they sell on Craigslist and they can do it themselves on Apples web site if they are the registered owner.
Plenty of other companies allow this as well.

Ok... How are they customers if they didn't buy the phone from google themselves? If they didn't get the phone from google then why should google be obliged to give them warranty? If you want warranty, get the phone from google themselves. Its not a disservice to customers if you were never a customer in the first place.

This is a little late, but maybe it'll help someone else down the line. I called a Google rep and they said all the original buyer has to do is call in, give them their billing address, name, and the phone's IMEI. They'll confirm their information. Then the original buyer gives google your name, email, and billing address and they transfer the warranty to you.

All of this information was given to me under the assumption that I had received the phone as a gift. If you tell them you bought it off someone from Craigslist, I'm not sure if that would disqualify the warranty transfer..
