Calendar reminders broken - just me?

I've nearly missed a few doctor appointments in the last month or so and I just figured out why - it seems that my Google Calendar reminders/notifications aren't working correctly.

For example, I created a test event 1 hour and 5 minutes in the future with a notification set to pop 1 hour before the event "As notification".

Exactly one hour before, it did pop, however it appeared on the screen for only an instant, with no sound (it was supposed to use the Popcorn sound), and then immediately disappeared, and did not leave anything behind in the notification bar as it always used to. If I wasn't looking at the phone at the exact moment it popped, I'd never know anything happened at all.

Anyone else?

Device is a Pixel 3XL, fully updated.

Okay, so the problem is directly related to my Android Wear watch. If I "disconnect" the watch, Calendar notifications work as they should. With the watch connected, Calendar notifications instantly dismiss themselves after popping for split-second on the phone (and not at all on the watch).

The techie in me wants a useful and functional smartwatch. But the realist in me is getting tired of trying...

There was always something about a smart watch that didn't seem to interest me. While it is a nice addition to the ecosystem, they still don't seem to be that fluid.

Take being connected to an IM app. I'm on several for the forum leaders. While the phone is silent for those notifications, my watch wasn't. Always vibrating, and no way to kill them. Granted, this was in the first gen Moto 360, and a lot may have changed.
