Calendar sounds: Can they be turned off?

I synced my HTC Hero Calendar with Outlook (which is also synced with my Google Calendar). Under certain circumstances, I would like to silence my calendar notifications, yet I would want to hear my phone ring. Ideally, a simple "no sound" under "reminder sounds" would be perfect, but, alas, that does not seem to exist. Does anyone know how to accomplish this Herculean feat?
