calender reminders when sync is set to off?

I must be doing something wrong, I have a few Google accounts set up with my Nexus 10, all are set with sync off, but I get calendar notifications. I figured with sync off I wouldn't, or is it loading them when I manually sync email for that account? If so, is there a way to sync email without it syncing the rest of the account such as calendar?

try disabling notification that sync. all previously synced calender might be notifying you.
also it might sync when you open the app.
