How hard is it to replace the camera lens? My EVO is just over a month old and it already has two good sized scratches. Luckily, they're just off the center of the lens. I take very good care of my phone and can't believe I managed to scratch it in one month. I would guess that within a year, I'm going to need to replace that lens.

Has anyone replaced the lens? I wish these phones came with a lens cover to protect the lens. What would be so hard about putting a built in slider over the lens? Or one like the HTC HD3 has?

the lens design is just terrbile. it's one of the bigger reasons that i have a case.

It is no doubt a poor design, they should have recessed it in the case a little to help protect it. Not sure on replacing it, probably be a bear for sure. This is one reason I bought the Seidio 3500 battery, it not only gives you awesome battery life but the extended back keeps the camera lens raised up off of the surface you set your phone down on,,, win-win.

+1

i love the battery for it's other function of extra juice, too

It actually is pretty simple. All you need to do is replace the back red chassis part. You'll need a torx T5 driver, and a small screw driver. Pull off the red chassis part and replace it.

You can source the red chassis part on ebay.

otherwise, just the glass part of the "cover" (it's not a lens because it is not required for focus, it's just a glass thingie).. it doesn't seem interchangeable.

It does look like it wouldn't be too hard. I've got the tools, just need to find the part. Off to eBay. Thanks for the link to iFixit. Cool site.

The silver ring just peels off with a finger nail, then you can peel the glass off. The EVO does not have be taken apart to fix. I have spare lens and ring for when it happenes to me. It has pretty cheap adhesive that holds it on.

Youre right. Sure enough the red ring has some type of thin double sided tape on it. You can just pry the ring right off and then the lens off the camera. I wonder what it would take to replace it with real glass.

Yeah, not the best idea in the world. I'm just lucky that I have spare parts. There are videos on YouTube on a guy who fixed his with s lens from a disposable camera.

I bought an OEM lens on Amazon for about 12 bucks, took 5 minutes to replace. Take the back cover of the phone off, pry up the lens with your fingernail (it's real soft adhesive). The OEM lenses come with a sticky back, just peel off the adhesive and put the new lens on.
