Can anyone figure out if there is a way to open phone to recent instead of dialer.

It has really bothered me to hat the S5 opens the phone app to the dialer by default. How often does anyone use the dialer?

Yesterday I realized that "phone" and "contacts" apps actually open the exact same app on this version of touchwiz. The only difference is they open to different tabs (try it).

So that got me thinking..... I wonder if there is an app,or a way of making a short cut to the "recent" tab of what I will call the touchwiz phone suite of apps.

Can anybody figure out what I can not?

I have the AT&T version. On my phone app I have four tabs at the top - keypad, logs, favorites and contacts. Like you said the phone app and the contacts app open the same application. With the contacts app it always opens to the contacts tab. When I select the phone app it will always open to the last selected tab prior to closing the app. For instance, if I have the logs tab highlighted (call history / recent calls) when I exit the app, the next time I enter the app that is the screen that is displayed. Likewise with the keypad tab or favorites, whichever is highlighted when I exit the app is where it returns to the next time I open the app. What carrier are you on? Could be they modified the app for a different behavior, carriers like making changes to the base software for some reason.

I am with Verizon. My tabs are keypad, recent, favorites and contacts. If I open the phone app, select recent tab then press the home button on the phone and immediately open the phone app I will be at the keypad tab. That just makes no sense to me. I wonder if I can installa better dialer? If I did I would probably have to give up the pop ups that appear when someone calls you. I really like that feature because it doesn't force you out of whatever app you are in just to decide if you want to answer a call.

You may want to have a look at Ex Dialer. It's a pretty popular replacement dialer that is quite customizable. I'm not sure about the pop up feature, I haven't checked out Ex Dialer in a while but it's worth a look to see if it suits your needs.

Well, there is no such thing as the perfect phone app.

For me though, it works exactly the way it should, because the Keypad is exactly what I want up first.

Why?

Because I have the Speed Dial entries assigned to the folks I talk to.

Keypad opens and I press the digit '2' and wallah, my best friend's phone is ringing.

What could be better than that?

I have all 9 of the first page Speed Dial entries assigned.

This is good news. One thing I missed years ago when I went from my last LG flip phone to my first smartphone was the speed dial. Unfortunately I call enough people every day that I would prefer to have my recent calls be default. There are only a couple people that I would want in my speed dial based on how frequently I call them.

FYI: ExDialer can be configured to open to the recent calls screen. Also, it does not change how incoming calls are handled so you won't have to give up the pop ups.
