Can I double tap the screen on the Nexus 5x to wake it up

On the Nexus 5s, will I be able to double tap the screen to wake it up?

Re: Can I double tap the screen on the Nexus 5x to wake it up

You will be able to if you install a custom rom on it. ;)

I really dislike that feature: my dad's tablet has it and I find myself inadvertantly turning the screen on all the time just handling it.

No I won't you would need a custom rom or atleast a root apk

It would be strange for Google not to implement it this time since double tap wake is pretty much a default feature for all LG devices, but I guess Google is more interested in your fingerprints.

The processor can do it, but they are using the custom die for other things. And yeah it sounds like they want their FPS to be an instant (< .6 seconds) unlock.

I assume that you can wake it up with the fingerprint sensor, which would eliminate the need for the double tap function.

It also as active on or ambient display or whatever the call it, right?

I have no experience with ambient display of Nexus phones generally. Does the phone know not to turn on the ambient display when it's in your pocket and you get a notification?

I'd imagine so with the new "sensor hub" The New Android Sensor Hub Will Significantly Improve Idle Battery Life While Doing More With Sensor Data

But, I hope they utilize this sensor hub as well as the proximity sensors to know if it's in your pocket or not. I belive the Moto X phones behave the same way. It knows it's in your pocket so doesn't keep turning screen on. But, when you pull the Moto out of your pocket, the active display comes on right away. Pretty cool implementation on the Moto. I'm hoping Nexus works similar when you pull the phone out of pocket.

It knows the difference between walking movement and picking up / nudging movement. However, I believe the display lights up for a second when you get a notification (if you have the settings toggled this way).

How close to the Moto X wave for ambient display will the nudge to wake thing be for the 5x and 6p? Will it be strictly motion or could I still Jedi Mind Trick my phone into showing the time and recent notifications?

Heehee thankfully, the fingprint sensor is on the back. So on the table we cannot wake the screen up

Not many people would know this yet. But if I had to guess, it will probably be about the same.

There's also the lock button on the side which can be accessed while the phone is on a table.

Re: Can I double tap the screen on the Nexus 5x to wake it up

The last few days, I've been playing a bunch of stuff on my new Chromecast with my Moto XPE and noticed that Netflix has its own Moto Display controls which was a pleasant surprise (kinda bummed that Hulu hasn't followed suite though) but it got me thinking about the differences between stock Active Display and Moto's version. I think I'm going to try disabling Moto Display for a few days to see if I can get a feel for what the 5X might 'sorta' be like.

I just want to have my cake and eat it too- is that too much to ask?

EDIT: Well, that lasted all of 5 minutes. Turns out I'm even more reliant on the wave to wake feature than I thought. Looks like I'll have to wait for reviews to start popping up or Marshmallow to drop on my XPE and hopefully they'll add that to Active Display with the Sensor Hub thing

I think Nova launcher (or at least the Prime version) will let you do that.
