LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

Hello,
I am trying to simply connect my LG G4 to my PC in order to access files from the phone, and to be able to insert my own files from the PC on to the phone. This is my first smart phone. On previous phones, I simply connected the phone to the PC via USB and was able to access music, photos, files, etc via "My Computer." However this is not the care here. Upon the phone connecting, my phone auto installed the software upgrade assistant, and the phone is reading under my devices on the computer, but not under "My Computer." I have tried the "USB debug mode," though this appeared to have no effect. Google has also proved ineffective at providing me answers. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

Welcome to Android Central! You're saying the phone shows up in Windows Explorer as a device, correct? What happens when you double-click that device--do you see folders? This is normal, and is how a device connecting via MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) appears in Windows Explorer. Older phones that connected via USB Mass Storage would show up as a separate "drive" in Windows Explorer, but newer phones no longer do this.

when I try to access the phone from the PC, it does not show up in 'File Explorer' - the phone will charge when plugged in to computer via USB but the 'USB Tethering' is grayed out and cannot be turned on.

Thank you -

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

Did you download the LG United Mobile Driver? I believe you have to do that first in order for the PC to recognize your phone.

Not the answer to your question but have you considered airdroid? If not give it a spin. It's free.

What version of windows are you running?

I like to think that my Win7 box did exactly the "plug in the phone and see it" in File Explorer. However, since the loaded driver is from LG, I am no longer sure where I got it.

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

I downloaded & installed driver as indicated. Still not showing in File Explorer.

I am running windows 10.

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the 'USB tethering' is grayed out and cannot be turned on in settings.

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

I 'chatted' with LG support and discovered that all USB micro cables are not the same. Just because they will charge the phone from a USB port they may not be able to sync. I purchased several additional charging cables and when I tried the one that came with the phone, it works fine. Case closed. Thank you for your help.

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

Hi the forum,
Hi B. Diddy,
A few year ago, I wrote a Excel VBA application to put some files on the SD-Card plugged in the smartphone.
You wrote "Older phones that connected via USB Mass Storage would show up as a separate "drive" in Windows Explorer, but newer phones no longer do this.".
Should you have an idea or better a solution to establish a dialog between VBA and the SD-Card on my new LG G4C.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Have a nice day

I have the same issue of connecting my LG G4 to a Windows XP machine. I am using the LG cable and downloaded the latest Android driver but still cannot connect. Can anyone help??

Re: LG G4 USB connection to PC issue

To access my phone remotely without connecting USB, I use the LG Bridge software, which uses wifi instead of Bluetooth.

Basically, go to settings on your phone, > share & connect > LG Bridge.

Enable LG Air Drive.

Sign in with an existing account like Google.

On your Windows PC, go to LG.com

Download LG Bridge

Sign in with the same account

Your phone and SD card will show up in Windows Explorer as G4 (WiFi)

You can move files around just like if connected with usb.

I know that the original user question is solved, but I wanted to offer this tip for a related problem. I updated the Android OS on my LG G4 phone and it changed the USB settings on my phone to allow only charging via USB. (I was using the same USB cable that came with the phone.) The menu option to change the setting doesn't seem to exist in a path from Settings. ("USB PC Connection" is gone from Settings>Storage & USB, and there is no menu option.) However, once you plug in the phone, you will get a notification that the USB cable is connected. (Look on your phone's display or in the icon displays at the top left. The USB icon should be displayed.) You can pull down and click on this to get directly to the Settings page. You can then change the option from "Charge Phone" to "Media sync (MTP)." If the phone later prompts you to allow the phone to sync your files or allow the PC to access your files, you need to allow this.

Heh I saw the title of the thread and thought maybe someone got the same problem I had with the new OS updated disabling MTP. Then I saw Caspian already posted the solution.

I cannot see my G4 from my PC anymore. I am running Win7 and the G4 has all updates. I use to see it as another device under the list of HDDs... non more. What can I do?
