Can I get some help with an MMS Issue?

Re: MMS Issues

It seems the only way to get mms message is to turn on your mobile data. Boo!

This is how it is for all phones pretty much.. Unless your carrier has some sort of wifi calling.

This may not help with your troubleshooting but...

I just got the LG G4 and I am on the Fido Network (Canada) and I cannot seem to send photos via MMS and I am having difficulty downloading MMS messages from other people. I downloaded Textra (I couldn't find the option in the stock Messaging app) to see if it might be an issue with the file sizes etc. and I have tried sending a photo using even the smallest size and I still consistently get an error message that it cannot be sent. When I try to recieve MMS I get the option to download and then nothing happens.

If anyone can figure out the issue please let me know. I posted this because most of the people I saw commenting were on T-Mobile and I think the issue could be related and more LG related rather than a carrier issue.

(I hope you're all having a great evening/day/life - wherever you may be :P )

My version of this problem seems identical to those reported here by larrynj and Ivegotthetouch, among others: My new LG G4 can't send or receive texts that have multiple recipients and/or attachments. One-to-one texts without attachments send and receive OK. I think this boils down to: My MMS is not working, but I'm too new at this to be sure about the technical terminology. Specifically:

  • On incoming messages, I do receive a notice "New multimedia message. Receive?" with a "Download" button. But when i click the button I get the whirling circle for several minutes, then it times out, reports "unreceived message", and offers a retry (which also fails).
  • Attempts to send result in several minutes of "Sending..." followed by failure.
  • The brand of phone or carrier sending or receiving messages doesn't seem to matter, tho I haven't tested this extensively.

System specifics: LG G4 model = LG-H811. Android version = 6.0. Service provider = Consumer Cellular (CC). The SIM card Consumer Cellular provided to me uses AT&T as the preferred carrier. When this SIM was in my previous phone, a Nexus 4, messaging worked OK.

Here are some fixes I have tried (or, for the reasons stated, not tried):

  1. My new G4 (which I bought from LG G4 H811 32GB 4G LTE T Mobile GSM Unlocked Android Smartphone | eBay listed as "new, unlocked") apparently was built for use with T-Mobile (indicated by a TMo boot-up splash screen and some un-uninstallable TMo apps), whereas the SIM I got from Consumer Cellular is tuned to AT&T. Consumer Cellular is sending me a TMo card to test that theory, and I'll report back here when I find out whether that helps.
  2. I don't have an APN set up at all, so the ideas in this thread that deal with APNs don't apply - unless having an APN is essential to MMS messaging?
  3. Turning WiFi off or on doesn't affect the symptoms.
  4. Turning Mobile Data off or on doesn't affect the symptoms.
  5. Changing the "Multimedia Settings" in the Messaging app doesn't change anything. Nor does the "Reset settings" option.
  6. I haven't tried any messaging apps except the stock G4 one, since this discussion indicates that alternatives like Textra haven't solved the problem for anybody.

I'd be grateful for any further suggestions!

Are you sure you don't have any APN settings anywhere?

It should look like this:

https://apn.gishan.net/settings/933_17_consumer_cellular__apn_settings_for_lg_g4.php

I set up a Consumer Cellular APN per the specs from that link (thanks tube517!) and rebooted the phone. Alas, that didn't affect the messaging problem.

Having Consumer Cellular check if it's a T-Mobile phone is moot. You purchased an Unlocked phone, which means any sim card should work. If it is still locked, you need to contact the seller.

I have assumed that the phone is unlocked, because telephoning and even one-to-one messaging worked as soon as I plugged in the Consumer Cellular SIM. But maybe there are differing degrees of "unlocked"?

Check with Consumer cellular on the APN settings. It takes a while to sort out these issues.

I had similar issues with the iphone/Group messaging to android issue. I had to tinker with APN settings and figure it out. I am on MetroPCS.

Royal pain.

Good luck and hopefully you can get it working
