Galaxy s6 Edge+ Wifi issues 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

Got my new Edge+ 2 days ago and while I love the phone I want to either dropkick it or my wireless router right now. I've searched and searched and it appears that the issue is with the phone not playing nice with my router than has both 2.4 and 5 GHz. It's a WOW! (now Vast broadband) wireless router (Arris DG860). I can't find an option on the phone to force it to use 2.4 GHz only, nor can I figure out how to either create two SSIDs on the router, one for 2.4 GHz and one for 5 GHz, so that I can pick the 2.4 GHz to use from my phone, or disable the 5Ghz band. But I don't know squat about routers so maybe it's not that hard.

I know that a ton of people are having this same issue across providers, but so far the only fix seems to be nixing the 5GHz band, so I'm hoping someone can help me, as using data only is going to get expensive!

I don't have a Samsung, but to select 2.4 or 5Ghz on my Nexus I go to:
Settings > WiFi > Menu (3 dots upper right) > Advanced > WiFi frequency band > Select Automatic, 2.4 GHz or 5Ghz.

I can't tell you exactly how to assign SSIDs, that's specific to your router. If you can't find it in setup, I can only suggest checking the user manual. It's really handy to give bands separate SSIDs for easy identification, but if you set the phone to use one or the other it will pick it that band for you, you don't have to do it manually.

Here's some things to try to sort this out. I know you said you don't know much about this stuff but try to get through as best as you can. Post back here for more help:

Try these steps, in order, until it (hopefully) works. They are some of the most common fixes for stubborn WiFi connections and have been successful in many cases. Do 1-5 together, 6-10 one at a time:

1. Go to: Settings > WiFi > Long-press on your network > Forget network.

2. Turn off the phone.

3. Unplug the power to the router for at least 30 seconds.

4. Plug in the router and give it plenty of time to fully reboot, at least 3-4 minutes.

5. Turn on the phone and try to connect.

6. Open a browser and get into Setup in the router.

7. Set security encryption to WPA2/AES. Do not use TKIP or AES/TKIP.

8. Try setting static IP addresses.

9. Try using Google's DNS servers. 8.8.8.8 for the primary, 8.8.4.4 for the secondary.

10. Update your router firmware.

If none of these help and the problem is only with this network, it's possible you have a signal interference problem.

You need to determine the best setup for your situation and configure the router and phone accordingly. To find the best setup try using WiFi Overview 360. The free version is probably all you need but the Pro version is cheap.

When setting up the 5GHz band usually it's best to set the router to use a channel well over 100. Over 150 if there's a clear channel. For both bands of course use channels with the least interference and best signal as indicated by WiFi Overview 360.

I just bought my wife a new Samsung Galaxy Edge 6 and it is having the same issue. We currently have the Arris DG860. Where do we start? I don't have much knowledge about adjusting the settings on a router...

Well, I guess the best suggestion I have right now is to read my post right above yours. And spend some time with the router user manual. Then post back here with any specific questions.

Re: Galaxy s6 Edge+ Wifi issues 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

I recently picked up a Motorola router and all of my notifications are delayed. Sometimes I'll pick up my phone and wake it up and all of a sudden I'll get an email and 20 minutes worth of WhatsApp messages. That'll also happen if I leave my apartment and it drops off of the WiFi. I tried Port Forwarding port 5228 because this is apparently what Android notifications use....but no success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Are you sure your 'Keep Wifi on during sleep' option isn't set to never? It is in the Wifi settings under 'More'.

So what happens exactly? Does it drop and rejoin frequently or stay disconnected? Typically u want the 2.4 and 5 ghz band on the same ssid so they can handoff to eachother more smoothly. Especially because 5ghz has low range.

May i suggest a channel change for the 2.4? Also download wifi analyzer or similar app and see your signal strength on your phone in different locations around the house. (Free) Perhaps it's interference. I had an issue where the wifi cut completely off and nothing worked besides
factory reset of router.

Best,

Matt

I'd suggest getting a decent 3rd party router and connect it as a bridge if ur router allows it. If it doesnt, then connect it as a wireless repeater .
You'll have a lot more options and alot more control over your wifi, along with better range and better wifi stability.
