Android Central Question

I formatted my sd card as shared internal storage and transferred all my data on it.. a few days later my phone stopped detecting it saying that its corrupted or that i need to reinsert it which i tried multiple times to no avail.. i removed the sd card and now internal storage is not available at all even though its showing 2 GB free storage in settings but no media is being downloaded it wont even save a picture or a screenshot or a voicemail.. in storage there is an option to forget the sd card wether its inserted or not.. along with a warning that all data saved on this device will be lost forever if i choose to forget.. what should i do?

There is an issue with formatting an SD card as internal storage and you have found out why we don't recommend it. The cards are not made for the constant writing and rewriting that happens when using an SD card as internal storage and it often gets corrupted. When this happens you lose all data and the phone needs reformatting. You have lost that data now and you need to reformat your phone.

Use an SD card as portable storage only for media and photos but nothing else.

I am sorry for your loss

When formatting as internal storage, the SD card gets encrypted. That means pretty much zero chance of data recovery, especially if it became corrupted. You could see if there is a data recovery service near you and see what they say, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

If nothing else, hopefully this is a lesson for you to make sure you have backups of all of your important files.

Welcome to Android Central! Where did you get the card from? Counterfeit cards are very common these days, especially through random online sellers (as opposed to well-known retailers like Best Buy). A counterfeit card is programmed to report much more capacity than it really has (e.g., a 16 GB card programmed to report 512 GB), and it'll work fine until you exceed its actual storage. Once exceeded, the data on there starts to become corrupt.

If you got what you thought was a great deal on a card with supposedly a lot of storage, then it's probably counterfeit.:-\
