Can I swap my AT&T unlimited data sim from my phone to a Gear S?

Not the case with the original iPad plans that were sold for the first three (?) months after the the iPad 1 was introduced.

I had unlimited long before iPhone was introduced. Back then, phones were simply incapable of consuming anywhere near 4GB and 3G was still pretty new thing. Indeed, there was never a limit back then. iDevices in particular have a special waiver that AT&T will give it a priority over other devices when it needs to. But the cap was introduced later when 4G came along. For AT&T, it was 5GB, not 3GB.

You can't buy it unlocked, but your can have it unlocked after purchase.
I would EITHER WAY recommend that you ask for an unlock code for your watch if you end up buying one, whether you decide to swap out your current sim card or not.
As an ATT customer, you should get the unlock code for free within 5 business days, as long as you buy it up front. If you ever want to switch from ATT, having the Gear S unlocked will allow you to move on easily. I got mine unlocked by ATT to use with Tmo.

For what it's worth. I'd recommend you do the same with all your phones that are already paid off. Nothing to lose, much to win from the fredom.

And, BTW, did you hear that ATT will now throttle grandafthered unlimited plans after 5GB? I have a grandfathered iPad plan which will be affected as well, I think. :(
You CAN buy an unlocked Gear S. They are available from sites like eBay and Amazon. I have one. I just went to my carrier, TMO, and purchased a SIM and had them connect it. Because my cell service is with TMO, I have unlimited talk and text, with 500MB of high speed data that only costs me $5/mo (after $10/mo discount, due to my qualifying TMO phone plan). It works perfectly. And no contract.

OMG, you're right! I completely forgot about that option! How much did you pay for yours?
I also have the $5/month option and would love to get another one for work, but was told you can only pair one discounted wearable plan per phone plan. So if I chose to get another Gear S, they said it would cost me $15/month. Bummer.

I paid $350 for the watch from a reputable US seller on eBay. See if they'll let you put the second watch on a shared plan somehow. But, even so, $15 ain't bad.

Re: Can I swap my AT&T unlimited data sim from my phone to a Gear S?

Perhaps you'd be willing to answer a basic question about tethering on AT&T? I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan from the days of being a legacy Cingular customer. I was able to use a 3rd party tethering app on my Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket until the phone died in June 2014. I believe the OS was Android ICS. My replacement (until end of 2 yr contract term) was a Go Phone ZTE 740 (Radiant). 3rd party tethering app wouldn't work; nor would other "post-root" tethering apps after rooting. The phone's OS is JB. Just purchased LG G3 for a new 2 year contract term. It runs Kitkat; and is upgradeable to lollipop. Am I ever going to be able to tether and use my unlimited data without paying the additional tethering fee to AT&T? I read on another site that ICS was the last Android OS that permitted tethering with no additional charges. True? If so, is there a way to wipe JB off of my ZTE 740 Radiant; or wiping Kitkat off of my LG G3 in order to install ICS? BTW, this isn't a deal-breaker; I've tethered sparingly in past only when I needed alternate internet access (when traveling). I'm not looking to abuse the unlimited data (even if it now gets throttled after a certain point). Would appreciate any insight/advice you can offer. THANKS!

Seems like an odd place to ask your question.
I think the only thing you can hope for is rooting your device and using FoxFi app.
For example, I have Root on my S4 and I could get Fox Fi to work on it with no issues.
Just don't update your OS and you should be fine.

It is always backwards compatible. The SIM itself doesn't receive any signals. Just contains instructions how to better handle different towers.

Really a wrong place to ask this un-related question. The only phones that let you bypass the restriction are the ones AT&T has never laid its hand on. Carrier phones will have AT&T unique module to check your account for permission to tether before it let you enable tether. I have seen many Nokia Windows phones have such feature built-in the base ROM even though the phone is not specifically made for AT&T. So, it is a crap shot. You will just have to try it out yourself. The problem is if you bought some foreign phones, even though they will not be tainted by AT&T but chances are they are not made to work with AT&T's LTE bands either. So you will be forced to work with slower 3G speed.

I've been thinking about getting the Gear S but I have a few questions. I'm on AT&T and haven't seen anyone mention this.

Can I swap out my sim from my Note 4 into the Gear S and use it as a stand alone device?
If not, can I get an unlocked version of the Gear S so that I can use any prkmepaid sim from any provider?

I just want to use the watch fork those times I don't want to carry a phone with me like going to the gym or riding my bike.

TIA

Since this question seems date depend. Chatted with two AT&T reps today, 12/15/2015, you cannot swap. I was thinking the same thing and thats how I ended up on this forum. Both the reps say you need a "watch" plan. If you put your AT&T phone sim in, it will turn off "phone" plan and switch you to a watch plan. AT&T detects the watch as a watch device and not just another smartphone.

Hate it when carriers limit a device's possibilities with this kind of technicalities.

My intention was to use the watch as a secondary phone, I wasn't going to wear the watch all the time.

Watch plan is cheaper than phone plan. So, it makes no sense for AT&T to restrict this. As always, CSRs are usually clueless. I have never had any problem switch my SIM cards around.

They must be confused with the other way around, e.g. use a watch plan SIM on a smartphone. T-Mobile did put a restriction on its wearable plan to limit it for use with only T-Mobile's watches. I won't be surprised that AT&T wants to (and maybe already) enforce this but I have no heard anything about it yet.

If you want to use a smartphone plan (easily $30 to $60+/month) on a smart watch (AT&T wearable plan is $10/m), AT&T should encourage it, not limit it.

Update: Just spoke to a different customer rep, she said the complete opposite. She stated, if you buy the phone without contract you can use it however you want.

To me the watch with a service plan is very unnecessary. Because if you have your phone it will be bluetooth or can be bluetooth, then if you go somewhere without your phone why not just take the sim out of your phone and put it into the watch. That would eliminate the needs for addition cell service and remove the need for syncing two lines. I guess if you're super in a rush or maybe taking sim in and out is worth $10/month.

Based on the last customer rep, swap away!

Hmm...i tweeted Cricket Wireless asking them if it would be a problem to swap sims between phone and watch and they said it shouldn't be an issue to my account at all...just that it would use data. Why would ATT give a crap which device i'm using as a phone? It's not like we're using both devices at once. Of course ATT need to make every penny they can off of us if this "watch plan" thing is real.
