Can I update Droid 2 after rooting?

I ran a search. I posted in FAQ. I tried Google. I can't find an answer.

Just got my Droid 2 the other day. Rooted it that night, and installed Wireless Tether, and Super Manager. I also deleted some bloatware.

This morning the phone said I have an update available. If I accept the update, will this render any rooted applications unusable? Will I have to re-root my phone?

I'm currently running stock roms, and OS. My system version is 2.2.19.A955.Verizon.en.US.

It wants to update to 2.2.20.en.US.

Seems to me, at the least, it could overwrite your recovery partition. At the worst, remove all root. Maybe you should make a nandroid backup, find out how to re-root and reload recovery, then try the update out. If it doesn't work, try and root that...or worst case, revert back to the nandroid backup.

I tell you this, I have a Droid 2 as well. Just for general info that does not seem to show up anywhere.

1. Before you root your phone, you should back up the Stock.
2. Droid 2 does not have standard Nandroid back up built in, you have to purchase for $2.00 an app from the Market "Droid 2 Bootstrap".

I have read that you should not try to download updates if you are rooted.

To get your phone back to stock:
Tutorial/Walkthrough for flashing an .sbf to Droid 2 (unrooting/factory restore) - xda-developers
Read all five pages of comments before you start, on page 5 is my experience. It does work but you must be careful and not in a hurry.

Once done, you may or may not have to download the update you are talking about. I think it may be in the SPF that you will flash.

Before you do anything, because I do not know how you deleted the bloat,
get Titanium Back up and back up all your not stock apps, that way they will be reinstalled after the above flash procedure.

Another suggestion is that if you want to be deoxed, then this link will be of use to you instead of the one above. You can read about it before you make up your mind. Both methods will get you back to Stock, this one just gets you back in a deoxed format.

Happy hunting/reading/stidying.

I just tried to update but it said "Software update failed."

Oh well, I'm not worried about it. It runs fine the way it is.
