Can I use the 3G Gear S2 (AT&T) without activating a plan on it?

if you only intent is to use a Bluetooth watch with a speaker you may want to consider the Huawei watch. It has a speaker but no 3g/4/lte. With Marshmallow the speaker is now usable and allows the watch to complete calls through the phone.

I bought a Verizon version without a contract. Don't have to pay anything extra a month. The only thing that I have to nitpick about is there's an annoying alert when I turn the watch on every morning asking if I want to activate it on a line. I just hit no and I'm on my way :)

Hello,
All the responses have been incredibly helpful, more information then I found searching on my own for two days.
I did have a question. If I bought the S2 3G from an outside party (i.e. Amazon) would I still be able to use the phone feature via Bluetooth.

Yes.

Do you have to pay 10 $ every month or just you paid once and you dont have to pay ever again ? I live in india and I want 3g version and dont want any plans on it at all. So I might get 10 $ recharge prepaid on it and dont pay ever again. Is this possible ?

I don't know about plans in India, but with US Verizon I had to pay an activation fee and then also pay a monthly fee for the phone line. I don't know if you can use it with a prepaid phone card type of setup. If you don't want the phone capability, just don't activate it when you turn on the watch, or each time you restart it.

When I bought my S2 3g classic from Verizon I had to activate it. I bought it at a Verizon store. However, the S2 3g Sport that my wife received via promotion with her S7 edge came unactivated and we have activated it yet. She is just using it as a Bluetooth device. The watch asks for activation every time it is restarted but she just says NO and it work fine.

I bought my S2 3G last night without contract. i am with AT&T and just told them it was going to be a gift. $299.00 paid and gone. Loving the watch.

Are you able to still use it as a phone as well without having the activation on it?

I know a few people that have 3g/4g versions (different carriers) and use it un-activated via BT. Works just like the classic. All BT functions work including SMS and Calls. Mine is activated (on AT&T) and I turned on Airplane Mode and then turned BT back on, worked fine for everything. Wi-Fi and Cellular were off.

I just got a Tmobile Gear S2 3G, paid $350
Got a prepaid $10 sim (it'll have is own number for a week, after that you can make calls via Bluetooth)

My real carrier is Metro PCS
I have Verizon Note 5
Everything works perfect

hello can you call from the watch or you need the phone to talk.

Is it necessary to have the phone and 3G Gear S2 on the same carrier? What I mean is, can I use an S2 activated on Verizon with a phone activated on a GSM carrier?

Yes, you can do that. At one point I had a phone on both T-Mobile and Verizon while my Gear S2 watch remained on AT&T. The remote connection and call forwarding still worked great even while using different carriers.

I want to buy a samsung gear s2 watch, its originally a Verizon watch. I dont want a plan on it i just want to know if the phone will work via Bluetooth on my straight talk Verizon phone.
I just want to know if it'll work through Bluetooth

It should no problem. I just bought a T-mobile refurb s2 3G on EBay for $99 that I use like that. My phone's Verizon but I just use the watch via BT. you can talk, make, and answer calls as long as the phone is connected.
