Can new phones still be rooted?

If I take my phone in for a replacement (the led display in the background leaked randomly one day?!?), will I be able to root the new phone? There's not some update that invalidated rooting is there?

Also, should I unroot it before returning? I hope I will be able to return this.

Un root it JC, then return it, and yes, rooting is forever, for now.
