Can not change the default video player in Samsung Gallery android 7.0

I have a Samsung TabA and have repeatedly tried ALL the usual tricks to have the built-in Gallery app accept VLC (or any other player) as the default player in stead of the standard player. Clearing all data in each app and Media storage and clearing all default settings and trying to set VLC as default, etc., etc. does not work.
Only opening a video file from file manager or another gallery app gives the option to choose the default player, and this works, but not in the standard gallery app. I dont want to brick the TabA so is there another way (maybe a special app) to solve this (big) problem?

There's no "This time/Always" choice when you open a video file from the file manager?

Then go to Settings/Apps/(all apps if you don't see the one that's the default)/Gallery (or whatever app opens when you play a video from Gallery)/Advanced/Clear defaults.

The next time you run a video from Gallery it will ask you for which app to use. Select VLC and tap Always.

(Clear defaults on any app if you don't want it to be the default app - that's wha clear defaults means, "clear this app as the default for its function".)
