I am interested in exactly how the double tap to wake feature works on lollipop but I can't find a video of it anywhere.

Does the device go back to sleep after you've released your finger from the screen?

Yes it does. I have that feature on my rooted G2 running Mahdi Rom. Tap... It wakes then back to sleep after 30 seconds.
