Can you no longer use HTC Sync after you've rooted?

I've rooted my phone, and since I couldn't figure out how to use Astro how to back up my contacts, I assumed I might be able to sync once the root was complete. Now, though, it seems that my comp won't even recognize my device. I followed the root instructions to the letter and it appears to have worked, but can I not sync any more? Many thanks in advance.

Never mind... rebooted my phone and my comp and it synced up.

Just sync your phone with your google account. That will back up your contacts and calender. I don't believe I've ever used htc sync on my pc other than to root.
