I am considering purchasing a car without integrated navigation, but it has Android Auto.

While navigating using google maps in Android Auto, are we able to simultaneously listen to the car radio?

The reason I ask is that I am concerned streaming music through my phone would incur high data charges.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for answering!!
SYNC3 comes with Ford cars.

Could one assume other car systems (eg Nissan?) also allow you to listen to the car's radio in the background, while simultaneously navigating with google maps on Android Auto?

I wouldn't assume, if important test as part of your test drive.

on ford sync 3 you effectively have to close Android auto and choose radio as the source and then go back into Android auto to continue navigating. unless I've missed a trick obviously?

When you connect phone to USB, it mostly but not always switches to an AA source, just have to "return to sync", change audio source back, then return to navigation. Annoying and I will report it when I figure out who to.

It depends on how it is implemented in car side. Having some experience with multiple rental cars and my own Mercedes, it typically won't switch audio source even when you navigate. The only time it switches the audio source is when you use the media player of AA.

Ford Sync's implementation seems odd and rather dumb, IMO.

My experience with two cars and AA (VW and Mazda) is that you can listen to music and navigation simultaneously only if the music/radio station is coming thru AA (e.g. Google Play Music, TuneIn, podcast, etc.)

What you cannot do is listen to a radio station coming from the car radio (e.g. FM or SiriusXM) while getting navigation directions via AA.

With my Mercedes, I can listen to radio or XM from car and navigation thru AA at the same time. So are a few rentals from different brands.

Is this new? I used to be able to, but now I can't get AA to play turn by turn navigation.

Yes, my 2018 Accord Sport 2.0t allows you to use Google maps, and listen to I'm sirus satellite radio at the same time.
