Cannot add family contacts to my favourites.

I cannot add any contacts to my favorites as there is no accompanying "star" in the contact details. I recently purchased a new galaxy s9 and transferred everything over from my s6. My contacts transferred over however, the favourites did not and I cannot work out how to add them again. No star, no favourites. Almost all my contacts are allocated to the sim card.
