Can't Access Camera Timer on Galaxy S4 Active

I'm unable to access the timer for my camera. I received specific (and simple) instructions from Samsung, and from tutorials on You Tube. I activate the camera, but absolutely nothing happens when I tap the left menu bar with the exception of the usual square appearing on the screen. Ideas, anyone? The phone is a M919.
