I am trying to add my Gmail account to the built-in HTC mail so that I can have all my email in one spot. However, when I try adding the Gmail account, it cannot authenticate my login info and will not add the account to HTC mail. I can open the web browser and log into Gmail with no problems, and of course the Gmail widget works fine. Anyone else having similar issues?

try using a mail app like k9 or something if you want them all in one place. The actual gmail app is way more feature rich for your email, I would think you would want to use that one for your gmail needs...

I just tried and had no problems and here are the settings I used
Protocol IMAP
server - imap.gmail.com
security type - SSL
port - 993

Tried again with those same settings... no go. It will not take my user ID and password. I get a message that says the sever cannot authenticate my login info. Yes, I made sure that my user ID and password were correct. The same login info works fine if I go to the Gmail website.

I'd rather not download another app just to give me the functionality that is supposed to be baked into the Sense UI.

Not sure why your having problems I only use the Gmail app since I have all my email forwarded to that account. You could try clear the cache and data but if you have other emails working it probably won't help. If you do try it will delete all your current accounts so you would have to add them all beck.

Thanks. I will clear everything and try adding the Gmail account before the other POP accounts.

The problem was that I didn't have IMAP enabled on the web settings for Gmail. Problem solved

I'm having the same problem, but I checked and I DO have IMAP enabled in gmail. The same username and password works in the Gmail app, but has an authentication error in the HTC mail app. I'd prefer accessing them all from one place and not download another app if possible. Any other ideas what the problem might be?

I have tried all of the above....and STILL can't access my gmail via the "mail button", gmail app, or a simple web browser on my new HTC One S phone..... :( Any other ideas?

I can access my gmail just fine on my laptop......

Figured this out

The problem is google requires a authenticated pw for its apps. Why I was able to login befote with out this process who knows. Follow this link it will instruct you to create a new pw and description for things like gmail or desktop to mobile apps.

Once you have generated a pw go to settings and then accounts and enter the pw with spaces included between each 4 letters. Voila you are now logged into uour google app. Each app requires a unique generated pw. GO:-)ood luck.

Just received my new HTC and was having same problem. Solved it by : settings, accounts and sync, Google, add account.

Hello, I am having the same problem. I just had to change my password for Gmail and now I can not login to this account with my HTC mail app. I deleted all of the accounts and re-added them. They all worked fine including my other Gmail account except for the account in question. It works fine through the Gmail app on my phone but I prefer to use the Mail app. I have gone through my setting online to verify everything is setup properly but still no luck. It was working flawlessly before the password change. Now I receive the "Authentication Failed. Please check your username/password" Anyone fixed this yet?

Try this:

On your Laptop
  • Open gmail
  • Click on your picture (top right corner)
  • Click on "Account"
  • Click on "Security" tab
  • Go to "2-step verification"
  • Follow the instructions until complete
  • Go to gmail inbox and find the 2-step verification confirmation email (in "updates" tab)
  • Open the email
  • In the "What if an app stops working" section click on the "Get Started Now" hyperlink
  • A new tab will open up requesting your password
  • Enter your gmail password
  • The "App Passwords" page opens
  • In the "select App" drop-down select "Mail"
  • In the "Select Device" drop-down menu select "Other (custom name)"
  • Write the name of your device (eg. HTC One M8) in the box
  • Click "Generate"
  • There will be a 16 letter password in a yellow box

On Your Phone
  • Open the "Mail" app on your phone
  • Open "Gmail"
  • Write your gmail email address in the "Username" box
  • Write the 16 letter generated password found in the yellow box from your laptop (not your usual gmail password) into the "Password" box
  • Click "Next"

How's that?

Thanks, I have had this problem for weeks. You are a genius it worked for me. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Brilliant!
