Can't change boot animations...

Previously, I was on a JellyBro ROM, and currently, I'm on the first nightly build of AOKP. Ever since getting on JellyBro, I can't seem to change my boot animation. My method, just for reference, is taking the bootanimation.zip file I want to use, and placing it in either the data/local folder, or system/media.

Placing it in data/local is apparently supposed to "override" whatever boot animation is stored in system/media, however, when I place the .zip file in the local folder, it just continues to play the animation from the media folder. When I replace the .zip in the media folder with the one I want to use, my phone just plays a boot animation with the word "android" written in the middle of the screen.

I can't remember for sure, but I thought I had been able to change boot animations before, via this method, when I was on Jelly Belly (prior to JellyBro), and before that, on ICS AOKP. I'm not sure what changed, or what's causing me to not be able to change my boot animations.

As per dmmarck's suggestion, I made sure the root options were all selected in the file manager I'm using to move the bootanimation.zip (ES File Explorer), and they are, and have been this entire time.

Any other possibilities?

Buy Root Explorer and then use that. It'll work, there's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't.

Also, you could delete the bootanimation.zip in both data/local and system/media THEN place it in data/local.

Honestly, I have no idea what you're doing to cause this issue. Can you post screens of both your data/local folder and system/media folder?

Make sure that the data/local folder is in fact the root data folder.

So essentially, it should be placed in here:

/data/local

These are the two directories. Please ensure that you are using an appropriate boot animation as well.

I had the exact same problem with my Nexus 7...

Be sure to use a Root Browser like the one in Rom Toolbox Lite... I don't think a file manager like Astros is good enough...

change permissions to rw-rw-r of the Boot Animation file, and put another copy in data>local

Again, worked for me on the N7

Booted up on nexus 1 animation, love it...!

Good luck, let us know if it worked...

I've used every type of file manager possible and have had nothing but success changing boot animations. Root Explorer is the "industry" standard and should be bought by EVERYONE doing stuff at the root level. It's unparalleled :).

When using Root Explorer or ANY similar file manager, make sure you set the permissions to read/write, paste/move the file, then set them back to read only.

Here are screenshots of both folders (it's the same bootanimation.zip in each location).

I suppose Root Explorer is an option, but eh, I just don't want to spend $4 on something that may or may not change anything, and ES works just fine for me otherwise. I dunno, I'll keep it in mind, though.

Delete both files and try again? It sounds like you must have screwed something up or the bootanimation is simply not compatible. Those are the only two options, really (unfortunately)--user error and incompatibility.

Hm. Well, I've tried re-moving the .zip back to both locations many times to no avail, and I extracted this boot animation from a ROM that was made for the Verizon GNex, so it seems odd that it wouldn't be compatible, yanno?

Yeah I don't know what to tell you at this point. Just wait until you do a clean install and try again.

Aha! In the area I keep the bootanimation.zip file (so that once I flash a ROM, I can just move it back to the folders, in case the ROM changes it for whatever reason), ES doesn't allow me to change the read/write permissions of the .zip file. Because of this, I just assumed it wasn't possible.

But when I go into the data/local and system/media files, ES DOES let me change the read/write permissions of the .zip file, and after changing it to read only, it's now working correctly. :)

Yet another reason why Root Explorer > ES File Explorer :).

Why it didn't work on my sgs3, I've already do anything like you do, but nothing change, give me your suggestion please?
