I want to delete the yahoo email account from the Android stock email app. However, when I hit "remove account" I immediately get a an error saying "Unable to connect to server at this time. Please try again later."

Here is what I've done to rule out other issues so far:

- Checked to see how account is configured in mail: I configured it as a yahoo account (so phone used the server contact settings that yahoo used in 2012 when I bought the phone) and I cannot change them. Had I manually configured it as I did my hotmail account I suspect this wouldn't be an issue. I can delete my default hotmail account with no problem (after I deselect it as the default.)

- Logged in to my yahoo account on a desktop and ensure the block that says "Allow sign in from less secure devices."

- If I go in to the overall settings screen, select email, then sync, the email account shows up, says it syncs when I push "sync now."

- It does not matter if I have sync turned on or off; I still get this error when trying to delete the account.

- Yahoo is not the default account in the stock app.

- I have removed the yahoo account under "accounts" in the settings menu.

- When I go into the account details screen under the account menu within the mail app and input my password I get the same "cannot connect to the server at this time" error.

- If I push the sync icon in the mail screen the blue bar pops up at the bottom that says "Couldn't open connection to server. (Account name)

- Verizon wireless had no solution. They had me ensure the account isn't the default account and then suggested a factory reset, which I do not want to do. Besides, I don't see how it would help because the moment I restore from backup the yahoo account will come back.

I am losing my mind over this. Really, I can't tell you how hard it has been to refrain from expletives just typing this post. Seriously. I've been trying to delete this account occasionally for a YEAR with no success. If anyone can help me figure out how to delete this account I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! What other email accounts do you have set up with the Email app? If they're all IMAP accounts (as opposed to POP3--read about the difference here: IMAP vs POP3), then go to Settings>Apps>All, select the Email app, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. This should remove all email accounts. Then open Email again and go through the process of adding your non-Yahoo email accounts again.

The reason why you can do this safely with IMAP is that your emails are all saved on the remote server, and not locally downloaded to the phone (and often immediately deleted from the remote server).
