I deleted a whole lot of photos I didn't want but found they were still there in something called autobackup. Then went to photos app and deleted them there where it told me they would be deleted from everywhere. But they weren't --when I went back to gallery they were still there in autobackup. Autobackup itself doesn't have a delete option. Very annoying. Any suggestions?

First, do you want to auto backup your photos? If not, then turn Google+ Auto Backup off by opening the Photos app (the one with the pinwheel icon), tapping menu, then Settings, then Auto Backup and turn it off.

Next, go to Settings>Apps>All, select Gallery, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. Now open it again, and wait a few seconds for the database to repopulate. The Auto Backup gallery should be gone now.
