I have a note8 a friend gave me. I never made a password. Idon't take the phone out. I was using a password on a site and looked at the password manager. For some reason the phone won't let me turn it off. it keeps going back to a screen that says put in password. must be at least 8 letters but I also can't get into any other sites or mail etc. i never used a lockscreen and don't know how. HELP

i took it to my neighbor phd computer science. we did that but we can't get into recovery mode to possibly have to wipe the whole phone clean. it's just stuck wanting a password.

the phone which i only use as a browser (no phone calls) won't work because it still wants a password for the lockscreen and i never created one or used the lockscreen. (something must have been hit by mistake.that's how this happened.)

The screen requiring an 8-letter password sounds like it's inviting you to create a password for something - for some site or new account, presumably. That would not be related to a security password for the phone itself.

If you cannot boot into Recovery, it sounds like a fault with either the software or hardware.

I'll move the thread to the Note 8 subforum, where other users may be able to help.

the phone won't power off by hitting the red power icons.

without doing the hold power and volume down and then that password screen comes back.

why wouldn't it be related to security. i think it wants is for the lockscreen. i never set up bixby but is using that button on the side in combination with somethhing else of any value?

where do i find the note8 forum. thanks for your help

I just saw the screen says "enter password to turn the phone off". That's what the phone needs and wants.

When you got this phone from your friend, did you ever do a factory reset and then set it up with your own Google account? It's always advisable to do that, both for the original owner and the recipient -- otherwise, you're using the phone with the previous owner's Google account.

Ask your friend that gave you the phone what the password would be.

yes, of course. My friend wiped clean the entire phone, did a factory reset and gave it to me just as if it werea new, but used phone. there was no longer any password associated with the phone. (I was looking at my password manager when it hapened but I cannot even get into my own passwords on the phone because I didn't set up any passwords to do so, just as an aside. ) if you have any other ideas, it's a perfectly good and well working phone.

Can you show us a screenshot of when it asks you to type your password? Just make sure to block out any identifying info first.

I cannot get into any settings at all or take a screenshot. I read some more. It is the Secure Lock feature. I've watched a lot of v ideos that try to get to Recovery mode but this video is different and got good commnets from people who couldn't get to recovery mode other ways.
.

It's a black screeen that says enter password. Password must be at least four characters, including at least one letter. then there's the space to put in password and under that there is "emergency call" and then there is the keyboard. That's it.

It would still be worth asking your friend if he or she recalls the password for the phone. If so, try entering that.

At this point you would need to factory reset in recovery and enter your Google credentials, if you don't know it then the phone will be useless unfortunately, these steps are to avoid theft even though it may not be your case it's now security locked and we can't get any further in talks about that .

will do. thx
he doesnt' remember. it's an old phone. Would samsung be able to tell me how to get int? I was able to bring up the screen that download other OSs but not the recovery screen. is that by design do you you think since theh Secure Lock is the problem? I would wipe it clean if I could get in. grrrrrrr

Maybe Samsung could help if you provide proof of purchase
I'll close this thread as there isn't much we can help with unfortunately.
