can't use custom ringtone after lollipop upgrade

I can't find how to set a custom ringtone after the lollipop upgrade reset it. The custom file isn't listed on the choices and if I click 'add' to go to the sound picker it is all blank. Using total commander from the 'add' menu does nothing. I even installed ringdroid and it doesn't list my custom file.

I did a workaround. Installed Zedge, downloaded and set a random Zedge ringtone, replaced it in the Zedge folder with my custom ringtone and renamed it to the Zedge filename. Uninstalled Zedge and restarted phone to make sure the change stuck, and it seems OK.
