Car manufacturer issue or Google issue?

I just got my Mazda 3 entertainment system upgrade to support Android Auto and Apple Car Play. My wife's phone works great with Car Play. I have a Pixel 2. The navigation integration fails consistently to find a route yet I have no issue if I just use AA on my phone. The same issue happens with Waze and Google Maps. I also can't seem to access the top left menu when in an app (Mazda's implementation doesn't support touch for AA).

Are these issues likely due to a Google software glitch? A Mazda issue or a cable issue?

Thoughts?

No touch in Android Auto either bug or another reason to avoid Mazda...

I tested in a different car, with a different cable and navigation behaves poorly there, just like my Mazda. It seems like there is some underlying issue going on. Now I'm not sure if it's a phone issue or an app issue.
