[CDMA HERO KERNEL] Gumbo Kernel GK-0.2 beta

Well, been testing the latest kernel today. It has gone 10 hours and the battery is at 46/100. I used EVDO most of the time, if not all. I made 3-4 calls, which could have lasted 45 minutes combined. I also sent some text messages and did light browsing as well as used Twidroid.

Battery life has improved yet I can't see my phone lasting 50 hours like gbhil reports. At this rate with this usage my phone would last 20 hours. I only have background Gmail working, every other background updating/notifications are turned off. Screen brightness is at 20%, I use Handcent SMS.

Any ideas?

Away from home and using cellular data all day 73/100 for battery. Google syncing is always on, and I even used Sprint Nav for about 30 minutes looking for a way home from the ski resort that wasn't snowed in.

About half the performance I get at home/work using wifi. All I can think of is signal performance/EVDO radio power draw.

What's most important to this test is the fact that you're seeing improved battery performance, and hopefully better overall system response.

For the good news - New version up as soon as i can reboot, sign the zip (don't have jdk6 on this development box), reboot back and upload. This version is 100% working with setcpu thanks to coolbho3000 (the setcpu dev). Governor sets as expected, processor ramps back to set value when woken up, and the sliders work. I recommend 528 max 160 min for normal use, 528 max 480 for performance, and 480 160 for powersave/msm7k.

Let me know when I can test it out!

Yet, still don't know how you get that crazy performance!

Are you using setcpu?
example setup:
max 528
min 245
Gov at performance will run cpu at 528 all the time
Gov at powersave or msm7k will run cpu at 245 all the time
Gov at ondemand will run cpu at 528 when running and 245 when system sleeps and is idle
Advanced settings tell setcpu when to throttle up and down, but default works pretty well.

At boot the CPU is set to performance. This is done when system starts for quicker boot after all caches are up to date (2nd boot usually). You need to change it after you boot if you dont want high performance. Use setcpu, it makes it easy. We just had to get our kernel in shape, and thanks to the setcpu dev we are getting closer.

ok yea i have setcpu installed, i just had the config wrong.but i though the idea was to save the info in scaling_governor file.So when i reboot the config remain the same.In this case it goes back to performance.Or am i misunderstanding how the kernel works.

that file isn't a real file. It's a virtual file created at boot time. I chose to have it boot to performance and have users set it down via the governor anytime they reboot vs. hearing a million times how "slow" it is when people first try it lol.

I will be writing a very small patch to set it to ondemand at default or powersave that will just flash over the standard performance version.

Before when the governor was set to anything other than performance, it stayed ramped down until you reset it by hand. That's fixed now. The sliders in setcpu also correctly determine the max and min speed of the cpu.

Alright. Updated to your new power saving kernel. And so far so good! SetCPU is working like it should in OnDemand Mode. Which is great.

Excellent. This is how the phone should have shipped IMO

I am currently using Modaco Custom Kitchen 2.2. Can I just flash your update Zip without wiping? Thanks.

Possibly. Be sure to back up and try. I would try without wiping first.

What governor mode do you recommend?
Ondemand, max 528 min 245. The cpu will ramp up as needed up to the max speed.

Pop the widget on the desktop. If you swap it over to performance without changing the sliders, it will ramp up to 528 and stay there while screen is on. If you swap over to powersave it will ramp down to 245 and stay there until it sleeps. 245 may be too slow, if it is change your sliders to 528 max 480 min. For ultimate battery set it to 480/245 ondemand IMO

Barely. If you're doing more than just quick checking a text it's going to be slow. Should do great on calls, but may have lag while it rings. YMMV basically.
