[CDMA HERO KERNEL] Gumbo Kernel GK-0.2 beta

Hey gb, I noticed in /system/init.d that I have two gumbo.sh files and two modaco.sh files. Why is that?

Good question LOL. If it's working as intended, ignore it. The version in the works does away with /system/init.d altogether.

Seriously, it's because you flashed more than one version. I couldn't tell the device to erase what's in that directory, so it's forced to write those two files. I had assumed it would overwrite them. Are they named exactly the same?

Another status report:

Flashed 2.1 Fresh again, applied the Gumbo 2.1 kernel and everything synced perfectly. It runs super fast with SetCPU on OnDemand and even with powersave at 245MHz. Yet, my battery drained pretty quickly while not in use. It went down 30% with no use and everything turned off (GPS/WIFI/Mobile Network/Bluetooth). At times it was roaming for signal. Again, don't know if this is more of a fault with the 2.1 Fresh ROM than with the kernel.

I have tried all 1.5 ROMs out there yet I want to hear opinions on which one currently runs the best with this great kernel? I like Fresh but don't like its blue theme, I like Gumbo but the Visual Voicemail app is not there, Modaco was a good experience yet I don't recall if it was much better than Fresh.

I'm gonna go back to 1.5 and would like to hear your opinion on which ROM+Gumbo Kernel is currently the best option.

Your battery issues are directly related to your signal. Searching for signal will kill a full battery in just a few hours. Running with a poor signal will kill a battery in just a few hours. If you had Sprint before, did your previous phone have signal issues?

Modaco, Fresh, Gumbo - pick the one that suits your needs. You need Sprint's VVM. Gumbo is out. You don't like the look, Fresh is out. Try Modaco, pull out anything you don't want, then decide if you want to use Paul's kernel with compcache and tun modules, or this one with frequency scaling and memkiller. Load it, set it up, nandroid it. The performance gains between them is minimal now that we have several kernels and memory configurations to choose from.

Gumbo 1.5b with Gumbo kernel is the best combination, of course.
Not necessarily. To keep compatibility with all the 1.5 ROM's the kernel acts no differently on Gumbo than it does on Fresh, Modaco, TTG, etc. Gumbo 1.5c will get the special tricks ;)

I say Gumbo is the best because it fits all of my needs perfectly. It looks good and is fast, although I'm not sure at all that it's the fastest, it works well for me.

Yes please. Where did you download the file from? Both of you.

1.5c comes when I get the kernel bugs worked out. Updating the ROM itself won't take long, as most of it's already done here.

Honestly, I have no clue. It's never left my phone. Lol

I flashed Gumbo 1.5b + the latest kernel over my stock ROM last night and I also have VVM.

So far I've had one complete freeze up of the phone which is odd but doesn't exactly bother me. The speed is great, I noticed that the screen orientation changes when using Dolphin browser are almost instant now vs. having to wait for the phone to catch up. I love it for that "fix" alone!

Keep up the good work!

quick question, I love your rom, very quick and fast, but that little green dot that moves around with the screens. is their anyway to get rid of that?

Check the first couple pages of the Rom thread. He explains how to remove it.. it involves editing software so if you don't have Photoshop, I'd recommend Gimp or something similar.

I would REALLY love to use this, but I can't seem to get Titanium to work :(
It says it needs BusyBox but I can't find it anywhere. I've searched forums and google and the how-to's I've followed have totally screwed my phone.
Please help!

Hats off on this. Free RAM was at 108 at boot. 7 hours in with a handful of stuff running and its 87 with 70% battery, and i've not got setcpu yet. gb you have a place for donations? b/t helping me root and this i figure i owe ya :p

Wow those are impressive numbers. You using Gumbo's ROM or his kernel over another ROM? Also you got any widgets on your screens? It's just 108 is quite the number.

I had a lot of problems getting Busybox on my phone. One of these options will probably work for you.

First off, there's some manual busybox installation + files here: busybox for HTC Hero - xda-developers

That actually didn't work very well for me. It installed but Titanium didn't like it and the auto-download of a working Busybox install inside of Titanium (press the Problems button) refused to work.

I then tried this option. [MOD][12/03/09] ADB Remount, Superuser, and Busybox - xda-developers

That's an update.zip style install which will get you a few other things as well. Be warned, this version of Busybox didn't work for me either. However, once I installed this and reinstalled Titanium, I was able to click the Problems button and have Titanium download the working version of Busybox. In about 5 minutes, Titanium was working for me.

Kind of a pain, but I did eventually get it working. I hope this helps you a bit.

I'm running fresh 1.1, and i reinstalled quick office with the prekitchen. Screens 1 and 7 have nothing, but the rest are either full of widgets or close to it. Home screen has 9 blocks being used (soon to be 10 as i'm purchasing setcpu right after i finish typing this reply). I just checked my RAM again and its at 92 haha. Battery is about to hit 20hrs and its at 39%. Really looking forward to seeing how much setcpu can improve it.

edit: just got setcpu, does this need to be open at all times to be in affect or can it be killed with the task killer and ran in the background?
