[CDMA HERO ROM] Gumbo ROM 1.5c

Same result can be achieved by moving apps that have issues running from the SD card (maps, usb and wifi tether, streetview, etc) to the /system/app dir. They are off the sd card then.

Thanks gbhil, I'll have to try that the next time I'm playing around. Loving the 1.5C. I think the problems I was having (there were others besides the tether) were from running other roms, installing and uninstalling apk's and not fully wiping before going to 1.5C. Loving your work by the way, I would never have dreamt of doing any of the crazy things I've learned to do to my phone if it wasn't for all of your helpfull posts and guides. :D

Yep. Lot's of ROM's leave things behind. The only way to ensure there's never any "issues" from leftover info would be to wipe the entire /system and /data dirs when the ROM is flashed. I'm sure you can imagine the uproar if someone released a ROM that wiped the phone :)

Sometimes you just gotta wipe and reflash.

No I have nothing installed on my SD card. It's odd, the last time I used it, it started and stopped fine. Other times I have to reboot the phone to get it to quit.

I have since installed an app killer because I have another app that hangs all the time. I guess I can just kill it with that now.

Try pulling the apk, then deleting it from /system. Use Astro (or any file manager) and click it to reinstall it as a regular app.

I'm not 100% sure why, but sometimes tether and maps have problems when they are not installed after the ROM's are loaded. I think it has a lot to do with the "leftovers" discussed above, but who knows lol.

I had a ROM that ran 2.1 that had Google navigation, and it seemed like a nice navigation app. But that ROM had a whole bunch of crazy extra apps built in and I just didn't like it very much :(
But if Gbhil makes a ROM running 2.1 that is as good as this one I will definitely download it!
Thanks again! :)

Right now, I have built AOSP 2.1 from source. As soon as anything is usable, I'll put it out for testers. It boots, and phone works, but nothing else yet lol.

That does happen. But that's why you can use command prompt or whatever linux shell you like and remove (rm) the unwanted extra stuff, which is usually what I do. I'll download the ROM, see what I like and straight away begin deleting stuff, then reboot my phone and begin the customization part of it.

I just installed the Eclair 2.1 ROM -- and while its cool and what not, I'm going to go back to Gumbo 1.5c -- I like the features it has and its speed/smoothness. I got a weekend project ahead of me though -- I plan on creating new icons, and hopefully beginning the process of cooking a new ROM and setting up Ubuntu for all my Android needs -- this is of course, all thanks to Gbhil for his excellent tutorials/walkthroughs that he has posted up!

You're active, curious, and not afraid to put out some effort. You'll make a great ROM cooker. Check your PM's.

thanks for the info. I have found that the only htc widget that i use is the bookmark one and I can live without that.
Not quite the same, but I found live bookmarks from the market to fill the need for the excellent HTC bookmarks widget. It places a folder on your desktop with all your bookmarks in it, and updates the contents whenever you add or remove a bookmark. Better than nothing.

Did this thread jump from one forum to another? I had the old forum bookmarked and had to come searching. Glad to see that it wasn't wiped out.

The alarm clock in 1.5c Bare shows in Unix time format. I've dug around Google a bit and found a few people having the same issue with vanilla Android installations but there never seems to be an answer.

Anyone have any idea how to correct this? I can't read Unix time. :D

Thanks for the great rom. I installed the bare version and am using open home. It is much faster without sense on it and a lot more free memory.

ok..wrong thread i know. but i was woundering if gbhil Donut 0.1 was going to be mantained or not?

it was never released.:eek:Like the title say sneek peek. But people was eager to run it on there hero  that gbhil decided to share what he had.So its not for everyday use..

Not sure. I've never seen or heard of this. Got any links? I'd love to have a look and try to figure out why, and moreimportantly how to fix.

To be fair, I did have plans to revive that ROM and update it, but things got put on a back burner with real life issues then work with porting Cyanogen's Nexus ROM to the Hero (which almost works BTW). 1.6 has a camera, so I will likely get back to it unless Sprint surprises us soon with 2.1

Hey guys, I'm unable to pull up the Barcode Scanner or even Shop Savvy in the market -- anyone else having this problem? Currently running Gumbo 1.5c. I'm wondering if the apps were removed, but that's doubtful. Ideas?

i had the same problem a few weeks ago and i had to find them on androlib and use a different barcode scanner program to get them

Did you flash a 2.xx ROM and use your regular Gmail account?

If so:
Nandroid backup what you have
wipe data from recovery and load the Donut ROM
Boot your phone
Go back to recovery and load the Donut googlebits
Boot your phone, but skip throuhg the setup wizard.
Open the market and sign in with your regular account.
Look at your downloads.
Exit and reboot.
Go back to the market, search for Barcode Scanner. Others work as well, but I know Barcode Scanner will fix ya.
Install Barcode Scanner
Reboot back to recovery and load your 1.5c backup, and all will be fixed.

First off, just want to say that I've been using Gumbo for the past couple weeks, and I'm very happy with it. I was using Fresh previously, and was happy with it, but felt that I wasn't getting the speed and battery life that I wanted.

I had a question for you, gbhil: The makers of Fresh discovered some sort of issue with the locations services. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I know that it's native to Cupcake, and that ultimately flipz just removed the HTC location manager to fix it. Does Gumbo fix this problem as well?

Thanks for all of your hard work, gbhil, and for being accessible on the forums to offer help when needed. Can't wait to see what you've got to offer when 2.1 (eventually) comes out!

Any Have problems since using 1.5c and loosing mobile web and cant get it back until you shut off the phone and start it back up???? had it with last rom too. but other then that great rom. but not sure if its hardware failure or rom problem. no offense ghill but im hoping its a rom issue lol

Its not a ROM issue dude. I dont have that issue. Ive never had any problems with gb's ROM's.

Nikki,
Its an issue with HTC. I use Beautiful Widgets now. I dont think it was fixed in GB's ROM.

Wow, that's some workaround. Why would that happen to begin with? Google knows what ROM's we're running?? OH NOO!? Lol, jk.

Thanks for the help, will do it when I get home.

Still in there. Every test I've done shows very little difference. The bug is in Android's location service, not HTC's. The idea was by eliminating one service hopefully the bug could be "cut in half" but I didn't see it.

Besides I use HTC location service for Footprints (yes i use it and love it), the clock and peep.

LOL Google apparently reads the build fingerprint, and if it's not on "the list" no protected apps for you. All the trick above does is reset your market cache.

umm just a question.

Has it been confirmed if overclocking the Hero's processor past 528mhz works now or not?? or are we still confined to that 528mhz speed.

Plan to flash to Gumbo 1.5c when i get my Hero, is App2sd automatically enabled like in Modaco and all i have to do is partition the SDcard with an EXT2? Any help on that will also be appreciated.

As expected, your instructions worked flawlessly, thanks again!

Yes and no on the over clocking -- over at XDA, people have been able to over clock past 528mhz, however its highly recommended that you don't, mainly because our phones will probably explode, lol. 528mhz is actually very good for a phones, they run extremely smooth, especially with Gbhil's kernal/ROM (1.5c).

Apps2sd is enabled by default -- all you have to do is go to recovery and partition your card -- when doing so, set swap to 0, ext to whatever you want (I chose a 1 gig), and then the rest will be formtted as FAT32. How you partition your card will vary, I have a 4 gig card -- and so I formatted as such. If you have a 2 gig card, I would probably do 512 for ext, and have the rest be formatted as FAT32.

I used to use Apps2SD, but stopped as it does become a pain in the ass after time, you'll see what I'm talking about. Flipzmode has written up why Apps2SD isn't all that great, you can find it on XDA or his website (geekfor.me) somewhere.

Yea i was reading the XDA thread, it seemed like hit and miss though, gbhil posted there himself.

They seemed to be able to overclock pas 528 which offered smoother performance but according to benchmarks, it didn't seem like it did anything. That's why im a bit unsure if it works or not. Overclocking the phone doesn't seem to affect the life of the phone very much but that varys depending how high you overclock it, the battery temps also seem to stay within reasonable levels. Arg, i had a link of a post gbhil made with a config file or something with the Hero overclocked to 688mhz i believe and he said something about asking people to test it and the battery running at 32C. I was gonna question on that but the link is on my other computer which is currently not working.

I just want to be able to overclock because of the somewhat laggy performance the Hero still has, maybe with Flash content and etc..

As for the SDcard partition, so i can name the ext anything i want? it doesn't have to be like exactly ext2 it can be ext1 etc..I plan on getting 8gb or 16gb class 6, probably 8gb cuz i have an ipod touch for my music.

I don't know where you got your information, but the Hero is not laggy -- at least not for me. Again, Gbhil's ROM does a damn good job making sure the phone runs smooth. He has implemented an aggressive process killer, the Kernal he implemented is also one of the most used, and I have yet to see my phone actually freeze -- it never has.

Also, Flash currently isn't even out -- expect on the newer 2.1 ROM's which again, need a lot work and it's not even REAL flash, its a very lite version.

You don't name the partition at all. It's already going to be named for you. When you get into recovery, one of your options will be: Partition sdcard, upon selecting it, you'll get: Partition SD. This is where you can set the swap, ext2, and it'll automatically configure FAT32 based on the two previous settings you enter.
xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] Gumbo 1.5c

Heres that link, was wondering if this actually works....if the CPU will actually be running at 688mhz
Again, I don't know. I haven't tried it -- I haven't needed to. There is an overclocking app that people used to use (some still do), that will allow you to try to go beyond even 688mhz, but again -- there's absolutely no point; our phones won't be able to handle it anyways. If I read correctly, someone had said that fasted out phones' cpu's could clock was about 700 something... I may be wrong, though.

In any case -- whatever ROM you choose; it'll be able to scale to your liking and if you really want to overclock it, you can install the overclocking app which is on XDA (Search over clocking app), but for me personally, once I installed Gumbo 1.5c, there was NO reason for me to install the over clocking app, this ROM is extremely smooth and runs very well... though, YMMV.
