CDMA Hero rooted

Help, my phone wont go to recovery when i hold down the volume bottom, power it up and select recovery. it stays in the HTC black screen.

Thanks for this.

Your welcome. I enjoyed the hell out of it...and still am :)

After I reflash and get the new update, I'll start looking into this again.
Work got busy and I had to put my ideas on hold for a few days.

I'll keep everyone posted

When modaco get's his ROM updated (and I get a decent version of busybox back ;) ) I think I have it figured out. I got it working on my adp, but unable to test on the Hero for now. Also playing with signing files and figuring out hwo to fake an update.zip

Try pulling battery, replacing, then holding HOME while tapping the power button. Hold HOME until you see the recovery image.

If that doesn't work, try reflashing it.

That's awesome!

btw - I restored back to orig/rooted/recovery but still could not get the update.
(I tried Fresh's rom, but get can't open many apps due to FC's)
after the restore I ran a reset to factory from settings.

it rebooted into recovery and displayed:
Welcome
Build: RA-heroc-v1.2.3
Formatting DATA:...
Formatting CACHE:...

It's been there for almost 10mins, is that normal? or did I do something wrong?

OK, nvm on that, I got past it but now I can't install the update.

It downloaded, restarted into recovery:

Finding Update Package...
Opening Update Package...
Verifying Update Package...
E:No signature (265 files)
E:Verification failed
Installation aborted.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure. I went ahead and reflashed the sprint RUU and grabbed the update to see if it could be rooted again. I was actually hoping not, as I have an Eris here and hoping the OS would be the same, so more people would be working on the Eris as well ;)

I'm betting you've got signatures from test keys on some prior updates, and the update is only going to work on proper signed keys. If it helps any, the orignal RUU + update from sprint still roots from the asroot2 exploit.

I've been reading all of the tutorials, etc, and I'd like to root my phone, but I'm afraid I'm a huge wussy when it comes to this type of thing. Is there a study guide on the benefits vs the cons, etc? I'm trying to get as much info as I can before I make the decision. If I ruin my phone, I'm not going to be able to drop 600 for a new one. I really like how my phone looks and works as it is, so maybe rooting isn't for me? I'm tech savvy, but I am completely lost with Linux. I have little doubt I can follow the directions to root it, but I'm pretty confused about the whole what happens next aspect. Any pointing to the right resources would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks, I wanted to RUU, but keep getting messages that either there is a USB connection issue or my phone has less than 30% charge and to try again after it has been charged (while at 100%)

ok, got RUU to work (had to use a XP machine, looks like my Win7 64bit drivers messed up again).
Stuck downloading the update. It keeps sticking at 11%.
Doesn't matter if I go OTA or Wifi, same results.

I've reset to factory twice as well.
MoCaDo needs to hurry up and update, lol!

when I try and boot holding home, I just get a screen of a triangle with a exclamation point in the center, in front of that is a phone. I'm guessing there is an error.

I've already run RUU, factory reset 2-3 times, guess from here all I can really do is run RUU again

Semantics - sorry I missed this earlier. Rooting the device allows you to change settings and use software that you normally would not be able to do. Properly done, there's very little security risk. Of course with full control you ARE able to screw up the device if you're not careful. My opinion about this - anyone who is smart enough to ask in advance is likely smart enough not to brick their phone :)

There are GUI utilities that allow you to do just about everything you could do from the command line, so a working knowledge of Linux isn't really needed. Linux comes in handy when you're trying to do something new, and your logged into the phones software through a terminal client. As a plus, all this is easily done through windows as well.

I would recommend you have a look through the Hero forums at xda developers and PPCGeeks. You'll quickly see things that being rooted allow you to do, and then you can decide if you'd like to try.In time, hopefully we will have a lot of resources to look through here as well. i sort of like it here :)

As always, any questions, feel free to ask.

Awesome, thanks!
Do I just drop it in the root of my sd, then hold home when I start back up?

Try copying it to the SD, and running it using the package installer from the phone. You can't hold home+pwr yet, as you don't have the recovery image loaded until you root. And of course you can't root until after you update lol.

Sprint and HTC KNEW that the hero would soon be rooted. It baffles me why they made simple things so difficult as a preventive measure. Guess they have seen one too many iPhone commercials :p

lol, yeah
Thanks for the info, I went ahead and reloaded fresh's .4 w/mu for now until MoDaCo updates his. I loaded from a stock rom this time and it appears alot more stable and I'm about to readd the apps I wanted in there.

I have some new info about the bootscreen situation and also now have 3 bootscreen packs to compare :D
I'll post my results when I get a chance to test

Thanks Gbhil, I'm going to do some research and see how comfortable I feel with rooting. I'm just not sure how its going to effect my phone. For instance, will Sense be gone, or will it just give me access to remove it, if I dont want it? My main questions are things of that nature I suppose. Thanks again, time to get reading!

After you root, everything stays the same. You do have the ability to change it though. For example - I have removed the sprintware and footprints from the device, as well as some widgets I won't use.

For now, sense will have to stay. Some core functions are provided by it. It does appear that sense has already been slimmed down to run much faster though.

hey gb..

Just a heads up, I've been chatting and beta testing with flipzmode and his Fresh ROM.
busybox is loaded in, plus wifi tether.

pretty smooth ROM, latest update doesn't require a factory reset/wipe, just update to it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584032

bloatware has been removed, but the apps have been provided (with updated code from MU)
you do have to re-root after install, he'll fix that next release.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

Wow. Very nice for a first try. He's done some things differently than I would do, but hell...he took the time to wrap it all up and make it an ez update, which is more than i would ever do lol. I hope he keeps up the good work.

Looks like a great alternative to folks who aren't familiar with or don't have the desire to use the cli and hack their own system.

Update -
I'd shy away from that Fresh ROM. There is a serious issue with the uid of root. Not sure if it's a bug, or if he is up to something. Was playing around and noticed his apps2sd and wifi tether (he provided, not in by default) are also not working well out of the box. I little bit of digging and I found his superuser.apk and su shell script don't work as expected, which led to further digging, which...well you know the rest. Eventually I found uid0 is not the user that su is using. At that point I wiped and reloaded. Hopefully it's just an error.

In either case...it's not something ready for prime time yet.

Well I went for it, got my phone rooted, and I think everything is in order. I followed a step by step thread from XDA and after initially having issues getting the Recovery image to flash, I got it sorted out.

How do I go about removing the sprintware stuff? I'll never use footprints, etc, so I'd like that to go too. Not sure about finding how to get rid of those things. Not sure how to get my phone back into root mode either, haha.

Thanks for any suggestions.
