I have a Samsung Galaxy S8+ on the AT&T network and just got the oreo update today. Went to change a contacts notification tone (not ringtone) and there is no option, but when said people text me, the tones I sent prior still go off. How can I change it or will there just never be a setting to change it now and they'll be stuck with those text tones forever?

They took the option away. To change the tone you'll have to get a third party sms app.

Nope, sorry that doesn't work either. The 3rd party apps will only allow an individual tone change after the conversation has started. It will not assign a message tone to an individual like before.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, I found the answer. If you go to a contact and select the 3 dots in the right upper corner, go to customize, and then notification "Sound" will be right there.

That's only for the call tone not the text tone. They had taken away the ability to put a ringtone to individual contacts for texting. They recently added it back, but it's only per conversation now.

Maybe this is old news, but I figured out how to do this in Messages last weekend.

On any conversation in messages, go to the 3 dots. There is a Notifications setting. In there you can set it to "custom" and choose any sound in your phone.

Hope this helps.....

They gave the option back a few months ago. It's only per conversation and not per contact like it used to be. People are still upset.
