I'd like to join the ranks of unlocked/rooted GNex users, but I've been sitting on the fence for awhile, not sure when to take the plunge. Yeah, I was so confident that VZ would come through with updates; well ....

Anyhoo, sometime in the next few weeks, I plan to be changing from a Windows Vista (32-bit) PC to a Windows 7 (64-bit) PC. What do I need to know or do when I change PCs if I have unlocked/rooted my GNex on the Vista machine. Or, would I be better off waiting?

My sd card is backed up frequently, so photos, etc., won't be lost. I've read through the guides, so much so that I can't remember what I read where. lol

I feel like the kid standing outside the playground looking in, but first time around I'd rather not cause myself "stuff" that could be avoided. :-\ Thanks!

I believe only the drivers are different for 32 or 64 bit windows. Should be smooth sailing other than that.

Thanks! Having never unlocked/rooted before, I'm having trouble picturing how this is gonna turn out. I hate all the transferring of stuff when switching computers.

So, when the switch is made, do I just re-download whatever method I used to unlock/root, install different drivers, then transfer the other files (sd card backups or whatever) over to the new computer?

I use W7 32bit and have not used 64 bit so can't give absolute solid advice for you but I'm pretty sure android sdk tools work on both. Not sure what method you are gonna use but just the drivers are the main thing to get right. I believe 64 and 32 windows ui are identical the only difference being how the cpu handles information. The 64 can handle larger amounts of RAM intended to stuff like cad and more intensive computer use.

Maybe someone using 64 bit can chime in.

Sounds about right to me but i've been using a mac for ten years so pcs are not my area.

I think as long as you have win7 you should be fine. And the drivers of course. Never heard anything about 64bit machine not working properly...

I'm on Win 7 64 bit. I believe the drivers are different but everything you need should be available in the sticky up top on How to root, unlock, etc.

Don't be intimidated at all... The process is easier than it sounds and a whole world of fun and good times awaits you. If you have any questions we're all here to help :)

Thanks to all of you! :) I admire (and envy) your knowlege in all things rooting. The 1-click method looks to be the easiest, but I think I'm gonna give CyberWarrior's guide a try.

The first step is always the worst step ... and I'm gonna take it ... any day now ... I think.

When you're done you're going to think "umm that's it??"

it really isnt difficult. i think the hardest part is getting adb installed correctly and making sure you have the drivers.

Lol word.. Basic computer skills will get you through everything regarding rooting, flashing roms, etc... That and being patient and the ability to read and follow directions. It really is all way easier than you probably think :)

Oh boy ... THAT hurt my head! I don't have the new machine to set up yet, but as I read Jerry's instructions, I had a sensation of my brain fragmenting with visions of the old BSOD!

Ha, sorry dude! Thought it might be helpful. I'm using 32bit so I don't have any personal experience with 64bit machines.

Shoot, I still have a laptop at home running Windows 2000 Professional, one with XP, one with Vista, and one with 7. Ridiculousness... but not Dyrdek style.
