Check out these oval icons I found today for the Honor 8

Well there's always a risk whenever putting new software... Although there is an official process so the risk is pretty small.
I may actually try it. I've contacted a friend of mine on the forums here and ask him if he minded helping me step through the process. Although I know a lot about specs of phones and know how to do a few other things I've never tried flashing a new firmware to a phone before mainly due to how many steps it takes and it seems like it's a pain. With 4.1 though which was how I initially learned to use EMUI on it may be worth it in this case as I liked 4.1 much better than the current software the honor 8 is running now. 4.1 was even further away from stock Android and I personally am not a fan of Android at all. EMUI I love because it's nothing like Android and it's still butter smooth the very IOS like fluid. In fact I have an IOS theme installed on my honor 8 right now so all of my icons look like the iPhone. My wallpaper is IOS. My phone dialer has the circles like IOS. I'm a Apple die hard by heart but what I like so much about EMUI is that it's a hybrid software taking elements from both Android and IOS and mixing them together along with Huawei honors own twist to it making it like nothing else any of us has ever seen before on a smart phone. It's in it own league and could easily be branded as it's own major software. There is no way EMUI when stock like I use it is nothing like Android. The look. The feel. The settings. All of it is just highly unique and different as a whole. That's why I prefer it over everything else. It's very innovative and I don't understand why so many people don't like it. It's a very easy and smooth interface to use but they cover it up with like a Nova launcher. I've owned the honor 8 three times now and not once have I ever even thought about putting a different launcher on my honor phones. I use Nova for all of my other Android phones but not stock EMUI. I personally love everything about it and I don't personally see the hype behind it being like IOS except for the lack of the app drawer. I'm been now with the new software having the option to use a app drawer I still do not. I keep mine as near as like 4.1 as possible. I just don't understand why so many dislike EMUI unless they don't enjoy change. I welcome it so anything unique and different to me brings innovation to the table and innovation leads to better experiences which I like. That's a huge reason I'm a fan of Huawei honor because their company is widely built off innovation. The honor 8 is the only Android phone that I personally know of that allows you to mix and match themes, icons and fonts without a third party launcher. That to me is impressive. I've got my honor 8 set up just like an iphone at the moment which I enjoy changing it all up every once in a while. I've located several apps for EMUI that offer 100s of themes, several different icon packs and 100s of different font. Then all the themes have their own set of icons within the theme itself. Here's one of my favorite set ups so far. Check out the icons. They are like some type of wild 3D art work or something and I only accidentally stumbled across this theme because all I could see was the color of the wallpaper I happen to like. I didn't even know about the cool and wild icons it offered.

Oh man that's my favorite part, no app drawer. If you would have remembered me from way back on the honor 8 you would know I'm like a new of stock EMUIs biggest fans. Even today now that they give you an option for a app drawer I still don't use one. I'm a die hard EMUI fan. I always have been from the very first day I ever used it. Not once in my three times owning this phone have I ever even thought about putting Nova on my honor 8 phones. It's always been straight up stock for me but however I do use Nova on my Android devices. EMUI isn't Android to me. In fact it's nothing remotely like Android other than they had nowhere else to place it at bc Apple would never had let them in their eco system so they had no choice but default to Android. You'd be in shock if you knew how many article type posts I've made about how EMUI could have easily had been branded has the mobile industrys third major software choice offered to consumers. That's just how totally different they are compared to stock Android. EMUI is actually more like IOS compared to Android but Apple would have never ever allowed EMUI in on their software system. Android was EMUIs only choice as to where to be placed. Android is all about customization so even though EMUI is nothing like Android we see it today in Androids eco system. I've heard so many say it's too much like IOS and I disagree. It's a hybrid type software with a little bit of both flavors and then they add their own twist in it too. That's why you won't ever find anything remotely like it. I know if I had my choice between Android, IOS and EMUI that I'd pick EMUI all day long and that's a true testimate to just how extremely different it over the two others. I absolutely love it. I'm a die hard EMUI fan. It's a blast to use every day and I never get tired of it. So if you use Nova I would highly recommend giving the stock no app drawer a try out for a couple weeks and see if you'll ever go back. It's an awesome software experience
I do prefer the app drawer. Keep my home screen more organized. I didn't like hidding my apps

Sounds like you could try to down grade to emui 4.1

I personally liked 4.1. It's initially how I learned to use EMUI on so I would not at all be opposed to going back to 4.1. I also liked the colored icon notifications it gave you and I didn't mind the split screen either in regard to the pull down. If it we're an easy process I would probably go back to 4.1 just because that's what made me originally like EMUI so much. Plus I'm not a huge fan of stock Android which is why I have become to enjoy EMUI so much. It's still nothing like Android whether I go back to 4.1 or stay where I'm at. I still don't use an app drawer nor do I use a third party launcher. I like EMUI stock just the way it is. There is not anything out there remotely like it as it's highly unique and different which was what drew me to it in the first place. Plus the software is highly customizable too which is fun to change it up all the time. Like themes, icons, fonts and wallpaper. I have never used a different launcher on this software though and I never will. It being so different is the best part about it. Plus even though the skin is very heavy it does not make the phone lag any at all say like touchwiz does on Samsung. It's a very smooth and fluid interface.

EMUI started to really suck after 4/4.1
The animations with 4.1 were cool.
Not everyone hated Huawei's overlay as much as the tech bloggers did.

I guess pressure from those who reviewed and hated EMUI early on caused Huawei to bend over.

Too bad IMO...

It got better with emui 5. Emui wasn't liked by many people so they had to changed it.
No what it was is that EMUI or the early phases of it were nothing like Android and people can't handle change so they all cried and yelled for EMUI to be changed and they got what they wanted ruining a very good and welcome change to mobile tech. I blame those who just had to have it like android. Sell outs!!

A new look doesn't hurt

A new look meaning 4.1 which basically had no Android features but only EMUI. That was the real change until so many complained about it that with every update since then they have brought in more and more Android like features and therefore giving you less EMUI features. The real change that I welcomed was when EMUI looked nothing like Android which was the biggest change I liked and 4.1 was mostly like that. It was more EMUI than it was Android. That's why I've pondered going back to 4.1 as I learned EMUI from using 4.1 which had the biggest change from Android as we know it.

I never used EMUI 4.1, only 5. I really like it personally. But I have nothing else to compare it too.

For me emui 4.1 was fine... Just throw in the app drawer and notification option
