Sorry if I'm posting this question on the wrong forum. I'm looking for a checkbook register app that can handle multiple accounts, and more importantly, can also synch to my Google Documents wirelessly. I used to use an app called Checkbook by Glitchtech Science, which was able to synch wirelessly to my Google Documents account. This app was found on WebOS with my previous Palm Pre smartphone. I checked the Android Market but couldn't find anything, or maybe I overlooked it. Thanks in advance! Casey

EasyMoney and Checkbook are two popular ones. Not sure if they sync to Google documents but they are free to try and also have paid versions.

Mint just pulls the info from your bank account after it's been posted there. With some banks (like mine for example) transaction aren't posted for upwards of a week after it's been made. Some people prefer to actually use a checkbook to keep track of their money. I personally use documents to go combined with dropbox for my checkbook. This way i'm able to edit the file both on my phone and on my computer, and i'll always have the file up to date on all locations.

Casey, what did you decide to use for your Android checkbook? I just switch from webOS and was using Checkbook by Glitchtech Science as well. ~ Craig

Casey, if your goal is to be able to "share" the register with another person, I suggest you look at ClearCheckbook. My wife and I both have the app on our phones, and because we use the same user account, we can see one another's transactions so that we are both on the same page regarding what is being spent and how much money is left. Additionally, there is a web interface. Both the app and the interface have a number of intuitive tools to help you set budgets, stick to goals, and see where your money is going. Everything is free, except for a few extra features I've never needed.

I use Mvelopes to budget and track my spending. It's a little different than other services such as Quicken and Mint. Mvelopes is modeled after an envelope based budgeting system. I like it better because I'm budgeting the money I have now, not the money I think I will get later this month. As money comes in, you split it up into multiple "envelopes" (groceries, gas, utilities, etc) out of which you spend.

The "envelopes" are just like the budget categories you would have in Quicken or Mint, the difference is only that you are budgeting what you actually have not what you plan to have.

Like Mint, it downloads transactions from your bank accounts. You can add pending transactions (like on a check register) and then clear them by matching them to transactions downloaded from your bank.

The Android app is in beta and a bit buggy, but works for me for entering transactions on the go. You would want to use the online web app from your PC to manage your budget and to clear transactions.

The online web app is an aging Flash app that's a little clunky, but there supposed to have a new revamped (I think non-flash) web app soon.

The service does have a monthly charge, however.

This app is not focused on graphs and charts (although it has some), or investment planning, or anything like that. It's focused on budgeting and tracking your transactions.

Casey, I just discovered Glitchtech Science recently developed Checkbook for Android. I'm very happy! ~ Craig

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the heads up! I paid and installed this program today and started playing with it right away. The great part is that hot d@mn, it does in fact wirelessly synch to my Google document account! The bad part is that the user interface is disappointing and non-intuitive.

This is the exact same program I used to use almost 3 years ago on old my Palm Pre for WebOS. I actually emailed the author of this program a couple months ago asking if he would ever re-make this same app for Android phones. The author emailed me back to say he was working on this, but I hadn't heard anything further on this until you posted your comment about this app.

This same checkbook app for my old Palm Pre WebOS worked great with a very user friendly interface, and I was able to customize things to my liking quite easily. But this new version made for Android is a huge departure from the original WebOS design. There are a number of things I find frustrating, such as trying to customize Transaction categories, and other things. I wish the author simply made this app exactly like what it used to be for WebOS, then everything would be perfect! Oh well, such is life.

I think I will email the author, Matt, to see if he can change the interface to make it like it used to be. As it stands now, I don't like how this app works. But I do have hope that things will improve.

Thanks, Casey

I sent an email today to Matt, the author of Checkbook by Glitch Tech. Here's what my email says:

Hi Matt,

Hope you're doing well. I don't know if you remember me. A couple months ago, I had emailed you to ask if you would ever remake Checkbook for Android, as I was a happy user of this app for my old WebOS smartphone.

Just today I paid and downloaded your new Checkbook app for my HTC Thunderbolt Android smartphone.

The good news is that it synchs perfectly to my Google document account! Thanks for that!

The bad news is that this new Android version is a huge difference from the old WebOS design. I find this Android version to be non intuitive, and hard to customize even simple things like Transaction categories.

Is it possible to redesign this app to be similar to the old WebOS design?

In the meantime, it would be a huge improvement if these few items could be redesigned:

1) Please make it easy to delete all the preconfigured items under "Select a Category" so that I can replace with my own personalized category items. I tried deleting all the Category items built into the app, but this ended up causing the app to do a Force Close crash.

2) In the "Description" box at top of screen, please make this into a drop down menu of various items I can enter and click on, such as "ATM Withdrawal", "Checkwrite", or Walgreens Pharmacy, etc, instead of having to fill in this box manually each time.

3) The default green "+" credit icon should be changed to a default "-" icon for a debit because most of my entries are for debits, not for credits. As it stands now, I constantly have to change the default "+" to a "-" to reflect a debit entry. Or at least have a separate box for a "+" and a box for "-" for me to choose whether an entry should be a debit or credit.

Thanks,
Casey
