Hey all. Here's the simple fix for this...but it will cost you. And, I don't know why; I just know it "didn't in 2.1 but does in 2.2".

It is your microSD cards speed, or "class". The EVO comes with a 8gb Class 2 card. This seems to come up short in 2.2 for some reason. You will have to spring for a new card. Get at least a Class 6. I've personally "fixed" six EVOs and it works every time. Simply get your preferred card size (8gb, 16gb, etc) in a Class 6 or better speed rating and the video will record and playback smooth as butter. The "class" rating is clearly marked on the packages of cards. Look for it. The "class" rating is simply the card's ability to move (read/write) data. The chop you're experiencing is the card read/write delay. A class 2 card is a little shy of the data rate the Evo moves 720p video data. I would recommend before you install the new card to: Plug the phone into your PC, mount the SD card as a drive, & copy the entire card to a folder on your desktop. Then swap the new card in. The immediately copy/paste the entire contents of the folder on your PC right back onto the new blank card. You may need to format the card first. Reboot the Evo, and you will be set. NOTE: This fix is absolute and will end your video chop issues! (I'm sick of seeing so many posts and replys on this with folks stumbling in the dark. Spend the $25 and just get it fixed!) P.S. Try it, because if it doesn't work, just format the new card, put your old one back in, and return the new card. See...what can you lose, except your video chop...
......sd card is not the fix...as I'm using the stock sd card that came with the phone....and mine works perfectly....I got a replacement phone....I went frome hardware version 002 to 003....and now it doesn't do it no more....so check your hardware version if you have the problem I bet it 002

I have a app called memory booster lite and it has a 1 click boost button which gives you some of your ram memory back. After i used the app then going to record a video, they play back just fine. It might have to do with the memory. If you have to much stuff running and your ram memory is being used up and then you try to record a video it might slow the playback down. This is all i could come up with. I will try playing around with the Videos and memory booster to see if low ram memory causes the video to playback choppy.

Does anyone here have any videos on their phone that were recorded back when they had 2.1? I have a few videos taken after 2.2 was released, they are choppy as hell. But I do still have the first video I took with the phone back in June when the phone had 2.1, and it plays flawlessly. So it makes me think the problem is not related to the memory card, because if it was I would imagine all videos would be choppy. I really wish HTC would hurry up and fix this. Its really bad to advertise a phone that has 720p recording capability when the video is choppy as hell.

Yes, have vids that I've recorded with 2.1 and 2.2 both were in 720p. Neither playback normal. Choppy as hell. I know for a fact when the 720p was recorded in 2.1 it also played back perfect in 2.1. I've emailed HTC about this and they say they have no idea and there is no information on any fixes about this issue. I've also emailed about battery life being cut in half after 2.2 and the response was that 2.2 uses more cpu power hence the shorter battery life.

Completely makes sense but why did it work fine in 2.1? Also, others have said there is no difference with a faster card. It's bull**** if we have to spend more money just to get the HD Video feature that was originally advertised with the phone.

The only video I have from 2.1 is very choppy, but again, remember since i use the memory booster then record or watch a video it plays very well. But that's my luck. HTC seems to think there's no problem and still insist to have me restart my phone. I hope the Evo2 will have all the defects worked out.

My EVO is hardware version 003, and I am running stock Froyo 2.2. I took a couple videos with the stock sd card at 720p. The videos had places where they jumped like the camera missed a few frames. It was not terrible for a phone camera, but not great either.

I just replaced the sd card with a new 8mb class 6, and the video recording improved significantly. A couple test videos showed no jumping or dropped frames.

The faster micro sd card seemed to fix the problem for me. Obviously, I can't speak for others.

It's NOT the SD card class. When the Evo was released it was released with 2.1. When the Evo had 2.1 there was NOT an issue with choppy playback. As I've said before, look at ANY Android forum and you will not see 1 single thread about choppy playback. It wasn't until the 2.2 update that the problem of choppy playback came up. If class 2 was an issue, it would have been an issue since day 1, which it wasn't. The problem is the read ahead speed, it's already been confirmed by a couple of rom developers and there's even a fix for it on the ROM I use. It increases it from 4kb to 128kb. With my class 2 in, it's a complete non issue with the fix on. AND just for the record...

When I rooted I had to revert back to Android 2.1....

With the exact same SD card in.. my class 2....

Videos played back perfectly fine on 2.1.

Once I went back to 2.2, those same videos played back choppy...

It's not the SD card class, it's a software issue.
