"Chrome app has stopped working" - Why am I frequently getting this error message on my Pixel 2?

I get this message quite frequently, especially during/after a phone call. I don't even use Chrome as a browser, so I never manually open it. Is there a fix for this? I thought about uninstalling, if possible, but wasn't sure if that would have undesirable consequences on a Google phone.

I would try opening Chrome, set it up and then leave it.

Thanks, I'll try that. I thought I had set up Chrome when I initially got the phone, but it must have reverted after an update or something.

I've gotten the error message again after setting up Chrome. Any suggestions?

Maybe clearing data for Chrome in settings>apps?

Edit: you should be able to disable chrome in that same screen.

Also, open the Play Store and make sure you have the latest Chrome version.

All seems to be updated and I've cleared the data/tried force stopping Chrome a few times. The error seems to return.

Edit: you should be able to disable chrome in that same screen.

Is this fine to do? Will some weird things in Android happen or not work correctly? I wouldn't think so, but..

You might, and emphasis on might, have some search issues if you use the Google search bar. But if you use a totally different browser, it should be fine.

If you disable Chrome just double check that the old System Webview app is enabled and updated. After Nougat this app was included in the Chrome app and I imagine this applies to Oreo as well.
