Chromebook Discussion

Seems odd that you can edit, but not create a document!

Problem is its going to put the little guy out of business. I don't see Dropbox being able to compete with Google Drive now, especially if Onedrive has a big price drop as well.

Good point, but there might still be a large contingent of people who don't necessarily want to go with big companies like Microsoft (or Google) for their storage.

Ehhhhh not weird to me. Were talking about software that is hundreds of dollars so I think that you can even edit documents is cool. Who would create a business document from an ipad or android device anyways?

I do agree, I like supporting the little guy but in the end I'll always go with what works best and whats cheapest. Most of the time that's the big guy.

To my knowledge, the free versions of the Microsoft "Office" apps on the iPad only allow users to view the files, not edit them.

As for Microsoft's OneDrive, MS is currently offering a promotion where users can get 100 GB of free storage for one year using 100 Bing Rewards credits. (Needless to say, I took advantage of that offer to have it match my 100 GB of free Google Drive data I have for buying a chromebook.)

I am up to nearly 400gb of free storage in onedrive.

Yes you can edit documents for free..... http://blogs.office.com/2014/03/27/announcing-the-office-you-love-now-on-the-ipad/

According to that link, you can only view documents on Word for the iPad; you cannot edit them.

Regardless, I'd still rather use a chromebook to edit Word documents in OneDrive, just because a chromebook is much better for "content creation" than a tablet, especially an iPad that has no 1st party keyboard options available. Besides, on a chromebook you can freely edit any Word document already in OneDrive without an Office 365 subscription. (This feature of Chrome OS vs iOS illustrates one of the primary advantages of web apps vs device-centric apps for files stored in the cloud.)

Office documents look better than ever on iPad.*They look just as they do on your PC or Mac. In Word, images, tables, SmartArt, footnotes, equations are all there, perfectly formatted. Formulas, charts, sparklines, conditional formatting, and filters in Excel help you make better decisions. PowerPoint presentations pack a punch with transitions, animations, speaker notes and much more. When presenting, you can even use a built-in laser pointer, pens and highlighters to get your point across.

I agree. Regardless I'm not going to go out and buy an iPad because of it. If I'm working in word I want a keyboard.

IMO, there is an opportunity for Google to attack both Apple and Microsoft over the limited features of the Office apps on the iPad and promote Chrome OS' ability to freely edit MS Office files that are stored on OneDrive (and note that freely available alternatives to MS Office exist that allow you to create and edit files in addition to reading files for free on any connected Chrome OS device).

I haven't used Microsoft Office in a long time. Is it better than Google Docs? I have been so happy with Google Docs that I haven't bothered looking into any other office suite. I did dabble in Apple's offerings, but I didn't really like it as much as Google Docs.

Everybody has their preferences. All my resumes I am submitting to openings right now were created in word so I have to continue to use it. When I import into Google Docs the formatting is all kinds of screwed up.

Google Apps for Docs is a big one.

I tried watching MLB.TV on my chromebook last night and it wouldn't play. The audio played just fine but the video wouldn't. Any ideas?

I had the same issue with mlb.tv last night. I used it without a problem last year.

I have been having an issue with printing. I cannot get Google cloud print to work and it is frustrating. I have followed the instructions on the help site to the tee and still nothing. I was using my Chromebook to replace my iPad and I used to be able I print from my iPad without issue.

You can always email it to the cloudprint email address, but that really shouldn't be necessary. Are you trying to do it from the same network or from another location purely on the cloud?

Same network.

You've probably already done this, but have you tried going to google.com/cloudprint, select Printers on the left column, Delete the printer in question, then add it back again?
