Chromecast on a Hotel Network

Hey gang,
I don't have a CC yet. I currently use an ipad2 (don't hate I won it in a charity raffle) with the hd connector to stream movies when my family is on vacation in hotels.
Problem I am seeing is that CC doesn't play nice with hotel wifi networks.

1) Is this due to the fact that typically you need to have a log in screen when using a hotel's wifi?
2) I don't want to have to buy a portable router.


Other options?

If you also bring a laptop, you could set up a wifi hotspot for the chromecast and ipad to connect to.
