I am in desperate need of a contacts overhaul. What I am trying to do is shrink my contacts down to just gmail and phone contacts. My problem is I do not know how the phone, android, etc. populates my contacts list. I have so much crap in contacts that I believe has come from numerous sources such as Twitter, FB, LinkedIn, etc. I may be wrong about this. Either way, I need help. Any suggestions?

Look in Settings / Accounts. Check each account to see what is being sync'd. If you have a Facebook account set up, for example, you should be able to see if it's syncing your Facebook contacts or not.

I had the same problem. I merged all my duplicate contacts, then I moved my contacts to my google account, I then logged into Google on my laptop and used the browser to auto delete duplicates.

Here's how I did it it if anyone is interested.

Apps/ Contacts. Select More/ merge contacts,

When all the contacts are merged select More/ Settings / move device contacts to. Select Google account.

Log into Google via a desktop browser, use the 9 dots and select Google contacts under apps (it's under more).
When Google contacts is open select find duplicates and delete as required.

It's easier than it sounds.
