Clear/Remove Items from the "Recent" list on HTC EVO Design 4g

When I hold down the Home key for a few seconds, a screen opens, overlays whatever is on the screen, and shows icons of the most recently used apps and utilities. Is there a way to clear this list, to remove specific items from the list, or disable the "Recent" function altogether?
