Hey guys,

So when I was taking the Droid Incredible for a "test drive" for the last month I fell in love with the Speed Test program available for free in the Market. It's a droid widget version of the popular website which lets you test your download and upload speeds. With the incredible I was able to get the following results on average:

3G Incredible: 1Mbs download
WiFi Incredible: 5-10 Mbs download

I was happy with these and considered them to be average. So I've been doing some testing with my EVO 4G. I live in Richmond and my understanding is that 4G is supposed to go live here around the end of June but I've been able to get 1 or 2 bars of 4G speed.

The results for both WiFi and 4G seem a bit disappointing to me. I understand that the 4G is not active yet so I'm certainly not jumping to any conclusions. More importantly the WiFi is almost an order of magnitude worse then with my Incredible. I've tried at two different houses with different routers, and rebooted both the routers and phones with reproducible results. I'm actually a little worried about the WiFi antenna.

Curious what others results are and what they think.

3G EVO: 1.5 Mbs
4G EVO: 3 Mbs
WiFi EVO: 0.5 Mbs!!

Thanks,
Raj

I just got 2.81 Mbs via WiFi

but that was my lowest yet. I am averaging over 5Mbs

Now I'm seriously concerned that perhaps something is wrong with my WiFi antenna! Maybe I should exchange this phone. What a pain, I have it totally setup the way I want.

That WiFi speed is really troublesome. Wonder if the antenna is disconnected in the phone? Is your signal strength poor as well?

Hmm, my wifi speeds on my evo are in the 11mb/sec range with 4mb up.

I concur. Testing last night I got 10mb down and 2 up. Much better than my Hero. That was also only seeing 2 of the 4 wifi bars. 3G was pulling down 1.5 (also MUCH faster than the Hero or my Pre).

Not sure why the discrepancy between EVOs.

I wonder if they'll honor that as a reason. I'm sure it's gonna be hard to explain to either the guys at BB or the local Sprint store.

How is the actual speed of the internet over WiFi? I saw another post were the poster said the actual speed was fast but the speed test was showing a very slow connection. Dont know if this helps or not just thought I would give you something else to consider (they thought it was a problem with the app)

It's actually very slow, that's why I initially decided to download the app and check. It takes about 8 seconds (timed with my watch) just to load a simple page like Google

Just did an interesting test....went up to my bedroom right next to the router (3/3 bars) and got speeds on WiFi of 8 Mbs down and 3.1 Mbs up, came back downstairs (1/3 bars) and took the case off just in case and got speeds of 0.176 Mbs down and 2.3 Mbs up.

Really weird, maybe this thing just doesn't received weakened signal as well as the Incredible.

Tried the Speakwasy Site with the following results:

Downstairs (1/3 bars): 0.5 Mbs up, 1.2 Mbs down
Upstairs (3/3 bars): 9.1 Mbs up, 4.0 Mbs down

My laptop which is right next to the phone just got 9.19 Mbs up and 4.72 Mbs down from the speakeasy site. I'm not a tech guy but I wonder if for some reason the EVO (or at least my particular evo) can't detect a weak signal or has a weak antenna itself.

Though I only get a low or fair signal on wifi - I am getting ~4.5mbs down on my DSL Pro line (I get about 5 on my PC). Up is low though, but so is my DSL line. 4G is still hit or miss. Just got 2.3 and then 2.9 down and 700 up a bit ago on a fair signal, but last night I got about .6. I also find that my 3G can range from .7 to about 1.2 down. I am using DSL Reports speed test which seems to be more consistent than the SpeedTest app. But wifi works well on my EVO - and the Inc. & my iPhone (but both of the HTC devices seems to be a little faster on wifi than the iPhone 3GS).

WiFi I am getting 8 down and 4 up.
Sprint told me that 4G in existing cities will be powered up over the next month or so as demand increases. The speeds will slowly increase weekly as the are boosting power at the cell sites. By January the average should be 9 down for 4G. 3G speeds are awesome here in Tampa, cant wait till July for 4G. Sprint is still updating 3G also most areas will see a increase in speeds.
