Compilation of RANDOM REBOOTING issue - advanced users, please read and help.

After doing some digging, I have compiled a list of thoughts on the random rebooting (Or more accurately, "power cycling") issue:

Many users (myself included) have noticed that rebooting stops when plugged in to a charger.

Reboots can and DO HAPPEN during phone calls - when they happen, you can continue to hear the other caller all the way up to the 4g screen.

I have been in a very strong signal area and a very weak signal area when these reboots have occurred, I also have never had less than 75% battery when they do. (coincidence.. I'm rarely "unplugged" with this phone until my spare batteries arrive)

13 out of 14 reboots were when I wasn't even near the phone. I didn't move it (there have been posts related to whether or not it's related to an accelerometer issue)

Many users have related the issue to "Always on" data setting. There is NOTHING to back this up, from what I've read (but I'm game, I'm trying it right now) - and I've seen many posts that seem to be a simple coincidence with checking/unchecking this option causing/fixing the random reboots. I, personally, had the "Always on" unchecked since the day I got the phone and after 9 days, I started getting the random reboots. I had 14 yesterday in a 3 hour period of time. Once I plugged in to power, they stopped. Today, they started again (at almost the same time of day) - which I find interesting. I'm wondering if there's something the phone is attempting at a certain time of day, that's causing this.

A user on the HTC forum posted the following:
This could be the issue:
"The HTC Evo could have a serious defect in the included storage department.
Evo user, MG Siegler, has been using this device ever since Google handed them out to attendees at this years Google I/O. The rumored defect is that the 8gb microSD card that ships with this device, randomly stops working and would then appear corrupt or empty. While a simple reboot would fix this issue temporarily, the problem would happen again. Siegler stated that it all started occurring on day 2 of using this device and has almost everyday since he has been heavily testing , and using the phone as a camera, camcorder, browser, and other features."

Many users have attempted restoring the phone to factory and have had good results "for a few days". My concern is that this is app or software related, and those users are simply reinstalling the same problem-causing apps, therefore, not seeing a true result of a factory reset.

Some users have mentioned and questioned the use of GPS or Google MAPS with relation to these reboots. (Incidentally, after a random reboot, I checked the apps that were running on my device, and MAPS was running although I hadn't started it for days)

Many users have rooted their devices or have task killers installed. I have not rooted my phone and I do not run a task killer, HOWEVER, I did have "Quick System Info" installed which included a task killer. I uninstalled it on day 3 because of the information I read here. I also had a power cycle that day (5 times in a row, I thought it was in a loop) - so I uninstalled it immediately. I wouldn't consider a rooted phone or a phone with task killers installed, to be a good judge of what's causing these power cycles since those two activities seem to be risky anyway. (JMHO!)

Anyone want to add to this, or better yet - can someone please recommend a fix? I hope I've been thorough in the findings - I'm kind of tired of reading all of these posts about this issue! I come from a Tour (which was REBOOT HELL) and I was REALLY hoping to not have to deal with that anymore, but I'm right back where I was - no matter how cool the phone is, it does me NO GOOD if it's constantly resetting itself.

Thanks in advance all you Android freaks!

To add to this, my settings are as follows:
GPS is off
WiFi is off
4g is off
Bluetooth is never used

I have also had a couple of issues loading the launcher when coming out of sleep mode, and an HTC screen saying "Sorry, we could not load [launcher]" (not exact error message, but you get the jist) as well as some lagging in Dolphin HD browser. I uninstalled Dolphin this morning. As for the launcher issue, I've noticed some icons are slow to populate, as well. Just more info for any advanced users who might be able to help..

I would start an open Google doc - spread sheet where people can list what software they have.

I would suggest to hard rest the phone and not install anything and see if it reboots. At least then you'll know immediately if it's a post factory issue or not.

I went for 24 hours without a reboot. It's hard to determine what's causing it, and even if I'm back to factory, I'm not convinced I will know - since I had a reboot cycle on day 3 and not again until over a week later. There's really no way to predict when a cycle will happen, so in 3 days I could say "oh, the factory reset helped" and then start installing apps and bam! It could happen again - but I won't know if it's because of the apps or just because it was bound to happen anyway.

I would do a factory reset and leave it stock for 3 days. If 3 days expires and there's no reboot I would start installing the apps I want to use and I'd only install one at a time, and I would give each app a grace period, where I'd install one app and then wait a minimum of 4 hours before installing anything else. I would also keep a log of what I installed on the phone.

If everyone with the issue could compile one master list of apps that are installed on the affected phones maybe it would be possible to pinpoint what app is causing the fault.

Also if the resets only happen after apps are installed then it's possible to start narrowing down the cause.

Mine started today (rebooted 3 times within one hour, so I shut it off). I read here about no rebooting when plugged in, and since its been plugged in it's been fine. Maybe a battery issue?

Sent from my HTC Evo 'cause it WAS the droid I was looking for.

Not a single reboot here and I hope I'm considered an advanced user ;) lol

Would love to get my hands on one of these devices people say constantly reboot or get 2 hours of battery life. Not saying anyone is doing anything "wrong" but would like to see how one of these reacts in my possession.

Did a factory reset and so far no more reboots. Let's hope it lasts.

Possibly the SenseUI itself is at fault? I have had the random reboot issue as well and it is completely unpredictable. I too thought it was only when it was off the charger until a couple of days ago when I was sitting right next to it and it was fully charged and plugged in when it rebooted.
I have since installed ADW.Launcher and disabled Sense completely and have not had any reboots?! I set ADW as the default and rebooted so Sense did not load at all.

I had unchecked always on mobile data and started getting the reboots. I went into settings and checked it back on and in the last 5 days have not had a reboot since. I also stopped using ATK. I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but have not had one reboot since.

I also unchecked always on data 3 days ago and got a reboot just today!!! I am thinking SD card - I installed the NOTES widget and when I press the home key (to see all 7 screens) I see "SD card no installed" written on the yellow post-it note! I think there's something to the SD card causing these resets.

I've had at least 3 reboots after turning off my Bluetooth headset. I would stop playback of Listen, from the headset, then power off the headset and the reboot would occur.

I've had at least 3 other separate pocket reboots with WiFi and Bluetooth off.

I would just like to add my experience. I was able to consistently cause my phone to reboot by turning off the mobile network and then turning it back on again.

I went into the running services manager and I killed every service but.
Calendar connectivity service
HTC IQ Agent
Touch Input

The crashing stopped. I wish I had written down every service I had running, but if my phone starts crashing again, I will do just that.

I had the random rebooting happen to me as well. And it didnt start until after i clicked off the "always on data" I put it back on and my phone was back to normal. Only i noticed that my battery took a major hit by doing this. So i turned it off again and the rebooting continued. So what i did was i turned it back on...turned it back off and manually rebooted my phone and turned it back on and it hasnt randomly rebooted since. I also did the trick with the networks. By changing the gsm auto prl to cdma auto prl with the network app....i thought this had something to do with it too..But im guessing its the always on data.

I just had one while watching the Portugal/DPRK world cup match, screen froze for 10 seconds, then the reboot.

I have lots of apps loaded, but only Sprint TV and messages running [in app switcher].

Here's my info [hope its complete enough]:

EVO acquired on June 4
Stock android 2.1, no root, no Sprint update

Networks: 3G only available in Tucson

4G - OFF
GPS - ON
WiFi - OFF
Bluetooth - ON
Always on Data - ON
Memory Booster, Startup Manager loaded [I know, can't really use it without root], Sense UI.

I also did a PRL and Profile update this morning before the first WC match.

Thanks.

mine was doing the same thing friday. i just got fed up after the 5th start within the hr and did a factory reset. Im going to turn off the always on data and see if it'll start rebooting itself again because I think I had it off last time. i'll give it a shot because it hasnt rebooted yet since ive done the factory reset

I have just started noticing that my Evo is doing it. It started about a week after I got the phone. I normally didn't notice, but I went on vacation in DC and I would hear it restart in my phone when I was walking around downtown. Then on my drive back to Cincinnati it restarted 3 times during the drive. I am not sure what the problem is, but I am debating trying to do an exchange. I have a little light leak too that is annoying me.

Anyone have any good ideas what is going on?

I haven't rooted and I use Advanced Task Manager to kill tasks that aren't actively being used every 30 min.
