Compilation of RANDOM REBOOTING issue - advanced users, please read and help.

I have just started noticing that my Evo is doing it. It started about a week after I got the phone. I normally didn't notice, but I went on vacation in DC and I would hear it restart in my phone when I was walking around downtown. Then on my drive back to Cincinnati it restarted 3 times during the drive. I am not sure what the problem is, but I am debating trying to do an exchange. I have a little light leak too that is annoying me.

Anyone have any good ideas what is going on?

I haven't rooted and I use Advanced Task Manager to kill tasks that aren't actively being used every 30 min.

Task Killers are a MAJOR no-no on the Evo...that is your first problem, a million threads about that here - do you have "Always on data" enabled or DISABLED? If it's disabled, that's your problem. Search my name, you'll see the huge post I have about it - I've enabled mine again and my reboots stopped.

Mine has rebooted 5 times today (and numerous times since i got it). It did it three times while i was scrolling through some pages and twice as it was sitting on the desk being powered. It also did it last night while charging at about 4am and woke me up. My EVO is not rooted and "Enable always-on mobile data" has always been enabled

dpg, it probably hasn't rebooted because when you reset, the "always on data" is checked by default......... unless you unchecked it after the reset - in which case, they reboots will probably start back up again, LOL

haha, yea i unchecked it this morning. no reboot so far and i'll check back later and let you know if it does or doesnt

Mine's a week and a half old, and no reboots at all.

Also no Task Killer, not rooted (except for unRevoked), no custom ROMs, Data always on. Along with BT, GPS, and WiFi or 4G when available.

well it didnt take long for my first restart. that is with the unchecked always on data

I have been getting restarts, but only it seems when the Evo is in my pocket. Also, recently (starting last monday) my battery life tanked, I was getting about 6 hours per charge. I found that I was doing a bit too many background syncs.

I am going to exchange my Evo tomorrow (assuming best buy/sprint has them in stock). I will report back if the power cycling stops in the newer builds.

I'm def not an advanced user, but....

I was having random reboots until i changed the prl thing GSM to CDMA, it hadnt even occured to me that is wasnt doing it anymore until i read this post, ( I guess since it wasnt driving me nuts), Also, i noticed a significant improvment in battery life.

Which setting are you referring to?

Sent from my rockin' Evo using Tapatalk.

For those suspecting the SD card, has anyone re-formatted it? If so, has the problem persisted after this?

I have 2 EVOs, one with this issue, and one without.

The one with, is already my second. First was returned due to a phone issue causing full battery drain every 4-5 hours. Looking like a third EVO will be needed at this point.

Edit:
Also, for those reverting to re-enabling always on data, does that make your phone/battery noticeably warmer to the touch, and thus battery drain, much faster? It does for me, although I haven't had a reboot since changing this, and thus it is not a solution for me.

I just reformated my SD card. I'll let you know if I have any reboot problems. I checked with best buy and they are sold out atm, so I couldn't get a replacement.

I was having the issue of the random reboots but re enabled the "Always-on mobile data" setting and that seemed to do the trick. However I still get a reboot when I place the phone in Airplane mode some of the time. (I go to airplane mode as the signal is week here in my office). Plane on stopping in at Sprint to see what they have to say since I can seem to find to much about the reboots on line other then this thread.

After I put my EVO into airplane mode..about 4 minutes later it reboots...it does it everytime

I found that after re enabling the "Always-on mobile data" setting that mine reboots know only when I go into airplane mode. Before with the setting off it would it 4 times in a hour and then be good for a day after and then BAM, 4 times in an hour again but not at the same time of day. I will most likely stop in at Sprint to see what they have to say.

After formatting my micro SD card and doing a factory reset, I have had no power off issues for two days now!!! I also have not downloaded any apps - yet.

i got my evo june 4. it ran like a tank, but had problems with wifi that mysteriously went away. i did not have random reboots until about two days ago, it started. several times in a row some hours. today for what ever reason i thought to uninstall newsbot. not one reboot since

I've had my phone for a week now. Just had a few reboots this morning (3 or 4). With the last two, the phone was sitting in front of me on my desk. The battery indicator (top bar) was showing 0% before it rebooted. After the reboot, it read 78%, which is about where it should be at the time.

Haven't tried the hard reset yet. Gonna see what happens.

Just passing along info for you smart guys out there that might can figure this out.

I was a recent victim of the random reboot. Mine was actually happening at a regular pace. I had it reboot on me 5 times in about 2 hours. Once while I was on a call. Previous to last night I noticed it once prior but something changed yesterday to up the frequency. Thinking back to changes the only things different was that I downloaded and installed MixZing (free). Knowing that was the only change recently I un-installed the software and it has since gone back to normal. I read the other post where some people were fixing it with the auto data on setting. I currently have that setting off. I wonder if it is a combination of the application trying to do something and that setting that could be causing the issue.

Hope this might help.

Kenny
