Confusion regarding "All Contacts" and "My Contacts."

Hi all,

I recently switched to the Nexus 5 from the iPhone and there is a LOT that I'm trying to get used to...

I'm having some trouble with the contacts in my phone. In the "People" app all the correct contacts synced from my Google Contacts are shown. However, when I go into the phone and hit the "All contacts" button, I'm seeing contacts that I've deleted from "My Contacts" in Google and therefore should not be there. Meaning, the contacts list in my People app and under "All contacts" in the Phone app are totally different.

How do I get rid of the unwanted contacts from "All contacts" in the Phone app? Again, the contacts in my People app are all correct. Those contacts and only those contacts should appear in the Phone app too, right?

That's odd. The People app and the All Contacts in the stock dialer should be identical since they source from the same Gmail contacts list.
The "unwanted contacts" - are they on gmail contacts list? (I know you indicated that you deleted them, but can you go back and check to make sure they are not present?)

Go to your People app - menu/contacts to display - is only your gmail account selected? Or have you customized the view there?

When I go into the People app, only my Gmail contacts are selected. I double-checked on Google on my computer and under "My Contacts" the unwanted contacts are not there. But they still show up in the dialer when I hit "All contacts". I've turned off syncing and cleared the data from both the Phone and the People apps and resynced, but the unwanted contacts came back in the Phone app! It's really weird and driving me crazy, because those are contacts that I've deleted in the past for a reason and I don't want them showing up in my phone.

Is there something unique about these contacts? Are these Google+ contacts perhaps?

To my knowledge, no. They aren't Google+ contacts, nor are they favorited or special in any way.

I ended up just deleting them from Google itself (on the computer) from the other contacts list (since they weren't in my "My Contacts" list). This deleted them from the "All contacts" list in the dialer. Totally baffling, since that means that the two were synced but not "properly" I guess...maybe it's a bug.

Yeah, it can happen if contacts end up in the "Other Contacts" section in Google Contacts or are otherwise unassociated with your Google account for some reason. Glad to hear you were able to sort it out.
