Contact has stopped working - What Gives?

Lately I'm getting "Contacts has stopped working" notification and I'm not even in contacts.

What could be causing this problem?

It's ok to post the question. Sometimes the search functions don't come up with exactly what a person may be looking for. And that thread unfortunately doesn't offer any definite solution.

I would consider some kind of sync problem. Go to Settings>Accounts, and check the sync status of your various accounts that have contacts. Do any of them show sync errors?

The weird thing about this is that it happens when pressing the home button after using an app that doesn't use contacts.

This worked for me today on my Android tablet. Disable Google Plus. Tried all the other suggestions without luck but this did the trick.

Done. Hopefully this works. I don't use Google+ and no one I know uses it.

Didn't work. Had my email app open and set the phone down for a minute. Looked back at the phone and that message popped up again.
